What did you do if irritability was your main issue?

Abilify was a temporary fix for us. Our DC became ravenous and exhausted. The weight gain and inability to get through the day standing were untenable long term.

Did anyone try changes in lifestyle (move/ school etc?)

Did anyone track it to their dc’s medication?

Our AuDHD+anxiety kid was irritable all the time at age 11. We treated with Prozac and Adderall and CBT-based therapy and parent training. Things slowly improved possibly due to therapies but I honestly think it was mostly just his brain maturing.

The switch to middle school helped a lot at school.

Generic Strattera (atomoxetine) helped to reduce the irritability of my child and boost his overall mood. It is a SRNI that has antidepressant like qualities.

CBT and then added in an SSRI.

I did not appreciate how much of the irritability was anxiety until we added in the SSRI. We actually added in the SSRI because with puberty DC started getting anxious about grades/school and natural disasters and it got out of control. But then all the irritability disappeared (before it was like DC woke up every day ready to be in a bad mood - sometime saying good morning provoked them).

Now when DC is irritated I ask them questions until they figure out/verbalize what is really bothering them. It’s usually something they are anxious/.worried about.
