What did you do if irritability was your main issue?

As the title describes irritability is the main issue for my audhd 11 yo. I’ve heard other posters who have found that the irritability was a symptom of anxiety, but my child irritability is pretty much just baseline, made worse by hunger or tiredness. I would say this is by far and away his principal problem, and I’m not sure how to go about helping him. He has a therapist, gets plenty of exercise and sleep, but it’s just so aggravated by so many things all the time. Would love to hear how others dealt

Great question OP. I’m also curious as I have a similar aged child with irritability being the primary thing we struggle with parenting.

Define irritable.

What kind of irritability? We did parenting therapy to deal with aggression.

Op - just cranky and annoyed and irritated by so many things all day. Not aggressive.

You need to stop allowing this. ADHD is not an excuse for acting bratty.

Who said anything about ADHD?

OP, how do you know it isn't a symptom of anxiety? Anxiety can be an all-the-time, baseline state -- it doesn't mean worrying about something in particular.

DBT because it teaches distress tolerance, emotional regulation, and effective interpersonal skills.

This sounds like puberty. We're all dealing with this.

Irritability is a sign of depression. Boys can show more irritability versus sadness/crying. Is your child being treated for depression with medication? This was my son’s issue. I thought it was teen behavior, I was wrong, abd wish I knew he was actually depressed.

Op - yes but he doesn’t fit the profile really - it’s not to that degree. He’s just chronically low key irritated.
I suppose it could be depression..
