If they really cared about prison guards, they’d support pay increases for them and also stop trying to outsource to private for profits that do everything on the cheap. Have any of you looked at the wage scale for correctional officers? It’s terrible. Way way lower than other law enforcement. It’s probably the worst job in the country when you factor in both pay and working conditions (unless you’re in the take or dealing in the prison, in which case the money isn’t bad.) Most prisons in this country are horrifically understaffed due to the fact that it’s a terrible terrible job—that understaffing leads to incredibly dangerous conditions. I DO care very much about correctional officer safety and you never see the conservative press writing about these very real worker safety issues.
