Traveling abroad with Green Card

I wish I could count all the ways you can f--- all the way off.

PP here. Why would you say that? What is your background? What I said is 100% true from a legal perspective. Sorry if you’re offended. Non Americans do not have any right to be in the USA, just as Americans don’t have a right to be in any other country.

Many posters have no idea what a bureaucratic nightmare USCIS is. My DS17 applied for a green card in 2021 and is somewhere in a 13 year queue. Every time he reenters the US, we go through immigration and then have to go through ‘second immigration’. Last time, second immigration took almost 2 hours. There was one immigration officer and about 100 people waiting. There was a bunch of officers just chatting in the corner. DS may be white and from a European country but that counts for nothing (nor should it). Please don’t assume that it’s straightforward for anybody to deal with USCIS.

Are you saying green card holders can be deported for any reason or even for no reason?

Not for no reason obviously, but there is discretion involved, and the decision makers are different now. Did you not know that?

Do people not read the news?

I'm the sort that sometimes leaves my front door unlocked in my safe neighborhood running short errands.

I am very lax in my ways and NO way in hell would I be traveling if I am not a US citizen. He's going after anyone randomly to make a point - he's gotten his entire admin to encourage making life as miserable and scary for those who don't have a US passport so to speak, as possible.

As an Asian American I took my kids on holiday last year to China so we won't be dealing with travel stress the next years with T in office.

Why risk it? Reading the news it really seems like it's risky.

I am a natural born citizen and I would be apprehensive coming back in.

NP here. A green card stands for permanent residency. Permanent! This means a person must go through vetting, after vetting after vetting to get a green card. They go through multiple interviews, fingerprinting, etc. There’s a reason it’s permanent!

Exactly you either become a citizen or not. A green card was never meant to be permanent it is a pathway to citizenship

According to USCIS website:

Having a Green Card (officially known as a Permanent Resident Card allows you to live and work permanently in the United States.

Hey they only use the word "permanent" twice in the first sentence on the website. Clearly not meant to be permanent, it's obvious. If it was meant to be permanent, they would have used that word 3 times, that's the special key to let you know they really mean it. It's just science

So green cards don’t expire?

Also, have you read the news lately?

It is not permanent. I know someone who got deported. You think you know something but you clearly have no first hand experience. You can have your green card taken away.

+1 If I were a green card holder, I wouldn't travel right now, especially if you've had any run ins with LEO, even a parking ticket.
