Birkenstocks

Same except 35 years. Used to be just me and my parish priest who wore them, and you had to visit a college town to buy them, lol.

That is so funny. I went to someone's barbecue when I was 22 and their parish priest was there. He was a really cool, hippie-ish guy who was drinking beer and roasting marshmallows, and when I was bemoaning my blisters, he showed me his Birks and told me how great they were. I got a pair shortly after that and have worn them ever since.

Father S started 20 year Birkenstock journey.

Sweetie, are you 16? Birks have been popular for at least 60 years. They've never gone out of style.

Yeah, because they've never been in style...

And I’m also never getting bunions. You win some, you lose some.

Since developing Plantars Facitis 4 years ago, Birks are my favorite shoes! They do take some time to break in but I’m an elementary teacher and on my feet all day. I can break a new pair in in about a week. Going to buy myself a new pair right now!
*Also, podiatrist is always happy to see them being worn when I go in.

Amazon has knockoff Birks for $30 that I swear are basically the real thing rebranded. They are great. I like the model with the two slimmer straps that go around your big toe, they are less ugly than the rest.

How many years do your birkenstocks last usually?

Are you that cheap? Couldn't even splurge on birkenstocks?

I’ve had one pair for at least 15 years. If you take care of the cork and footbed, getting them resoled or repaired otherwise can help them last for what seems like forever.

Yeah that's why Vogue was hyping them last summer: https://www.vogue.com/article/birkenstock-collaborations

And in 2022: https://www.vogue.com/article/birkenstock-outfits

And gd help us in 2020, the pairing of Birks and masks: https://www.vogue.com/article/the-look-of-2020-is-birkenstocks-and-masks

Anyway, you don't like them and that's fine - but your taste doesn't dictate what's in style.

I got my first pair last summer and have already worn the sole down. I'm very hard on shoes and walk a ton - including in these; I really love them. I would absolutely buy a new pair - in fact, I already did. And now those soles are getting worn down.

They tend to make your feet smell.

I wonder if they just don’t make the soles as well as they used to.

Or maybe you scuff your feet when you walk in the Birks? DH does, so his soles wear out more quickly than mine.
