with Rhee out, time to move out of DC?

School reform is not just Rhee, never has been and I was a fan. The reality is that reform is going to happen or not happen school by school. The real question is does the school you are in have a critical mass of committed parents? Do you have a principal that will let that group of parents support the school. Do you have a culture in the school that supports education. (This is not always the case even in the burbs. ) No chancellor, mayor or otherwise will be able to change these facts on the ground.

Excellent. I could stand for lower property taxes.

This is exactly the mentality that makes me question why I live in this city. Oh yeah, declining property values would be a great thing so you don't have to pay as much in taxes.....ugh!

We like parents who are involved in improving the communities of ALL students, not just the Middle Class white kids (like mine) who will do well everywhere. Rhee is juvenile, and mean. Gray and Fenty are the people to look toward right now, they go back years and DC is a small town. Watch a partnership unfold that will not include Rhee. In fact, Fenty has never looked so happy as in the last few days.

If you are correct, this is a fascinating observation.

Since I can't pick your brain over coffee or wine, do you have any other petals to blow into the breeze?

Gray supporters are the most naive hippy flower child people out there. They are the ones holding the city back. They don't seem to realize that some people can not be helped and as much as you spend, $16k plus to be exact, they will always be the bottom of the barrel.

OP, cut your losses now and move while your child is still young. This city is only worth living in if your child is going to private school. I understand why people now live in the burbs and would rather drive an hr each way than live in this dump.

Not Columbia Hts, I hope! PP had it right, there are no guarantees when it comes to learning. As Twain (sort of) said, don't let school interfere with your education.

20:17, why did you move to DC with that attitude? Go back to where you came from - please!

Holy shit! You haven't traveled much at all, have you?!

Nevermind Amsterdam, Berlin, Berkeley, or Albuquerque - it sounds like you've never even been to Takoma Park! It's on the red line you know, you should drop by. Just to dip a toe in the water.

Actually, a DC Urban Moms informal summit would be fun. Anyone game?

Michelle Rhee is no Geoffrey Canada. In order to be a change agent, you must get buy in from people. That's what leadership is. I've never heard Geoffrey Canada be anything but gratious, and yet he is taking over Harlem, one child at a time.

The structure of DCPS needs to be blown up, all the teachers fired then be made to interview to get their jobs back. If they can explain why they deserve to still be teachers they get to come back, the good ones stay the bad ones that just see this as a paycheck not a career sent packing. We haven't had a good union bust since President Reagan got rid of the air traffic controllers. Now, labor holds everyone else hostage. DC teachers and their union don't have the students interests at heart, they just want to preserve their jobs and increase salaries. Period. And before the teachers that peruse these boards start to flame, you cant all be that great if your school system is that horrible.

well your grammar and writing style say quite a bit about how great you are. btw, interviewing has been shown to be a very poor predictor of job performance.

Well, the chancellor can move the principal, whether he/she is high performing or not. But a committed group of parents can deal with that.
