with Rhee out, time to move out of DC?

Anonymous
We're in a so-so DCPS and can't afford private. Is it time to look at MoCo, Arlington, and Fairfax? We might get lucky with a good charter, but the commute might be the same and the best charters aren't as good as middling suburban publics. We hate to think of leaving the District. Any hope for a Chancellor that will be strong and Gray is not a step backwards? What to do?

Buh-bye!

From a longtime DCPS parent who was delighted to see Rhee voted out.

have to disagree with you there. especially if we are talking about moco. honestly, i don't think you are going to see a marked change in your day-to-day experience of your school.

grass is always greener. i wouldn't move unless i could figure out a way to get into the very top performing schools in fairfax county.

If you don't want to leave, then don't. It doesn't make you a bad parent to be in DCPS. Any school requires work by parents. Even privates. (BTDT) Before you uproot your family, think long and hard about what happpens if the schools you think you'd be getting don't work out for your child. Education and learning don't start or end at the classroom door.

Wait! Find out where Rhee is going next and you can move there!

Don't panic. Don't be fear driven.

Gray is a smart guy, who understands and cares about education and who, as a councilmember in the Williams administration, supported mayoral control of the schools before councilmember Adrian Fenty did.

Wait and see.

Wow, I might also agree with the PP who suggests just following Rhee.

Look, it's not like Gray wants crappy schools, Be real.

No, but Gray is dreaming that he'll be able to improve the public schools without firing bad teachers and getting rid of ineffective admin.

I'm afraid that our housing values are going to do down now that Fentry/Rhee are out.
Anonymous
Oh stop this nonsense. I cannot believe that Gray wants to keep bad teachers on board!

OP and others, give this some time. Further, I would not be surprised if Rhee stayed through next summer.

Excellent. I could stand for lower property taxes.

Rhee is gone...time to move the kiddos back into DCPS

Was your so-so DCPS getting better under Rhee because of Rhee? Or was it getting better because more children with involved parents are living in your neighborhood and going to the school. Rhee did not have control over a lot of the factors that made schools good, she likely had control over more factors that made schools bad. I would take a good look at whether it is reasonable to think whatever trajectory your particular school is on will change for the better or worse under a Gray administration.

I applied my child to private last week.

Did not see any improvements in my so-so DCPS under Rhee. Still planning on the same OOB/Charter strategy as before.
21:42 - was your kid in DCPS before Rhee? Where did you move him/her while Rhee was here?
