DCPS v Rosemary Hills

We moved from Petworth to CC and are ecstatic about the lack of crime, particularly where our kids are concerned. We also felt that BCC offered far more than J-R.

We have an issue in my kid’s class that is ruining this year. I would take last year with 27 over this year with 20 in a heartbeat.

How would parents who’ve had kids at both RHPS and a DCPS school in the JKLM or Mann districts evaluate RHPS vs those schools?

We’re trying to figure out whether to move.

I’d specifically like to know about:
- academics
- parent community
- # teachers in class
- specials / extracurriculars during after school day

Why do you assume PP is middle class and wouldn’t be one of the wealthier families at Rosemary Hills?

PP was referring to Richard Montgomery HS it appears. Not Rosemary Hills ES.

I doubt you will find anyone who personally moved from a home in CCDC or AU Park to Woodbine.

I would not move for ES. I would move for MS/HS.

I've lived in Chevy Chase for 50 years. Tons of people move from CCDC or AU Park to Chevy Chase -- Woodbine or other streets. Also, people move from other parts of DC.

I had kids at CCES, RHPS, MCPS magnet middle schools and BCC. They have cousins the same age who went through Janney/Deal/Jackson-Reed. Everyone turned out fine and went to good colleges. Each has their advantages.

The Janney/Deal/Jackson-Reed path is more diverse (a benefit in my view) and gives kids more independence to get back and forth to school by foot or bike.

Academically, MCPS probably a little better in terms of providing learning opportunities for gifted students (magnets, which we took advantage of). MCPS still sucks at providing IEPs and 504s to 2E kids, but probably not as much as DCPS.

Honestly, find a home and neighborhood you like, and your kid will be fine.

I’m the PP mentioned above. We’re considering moving from CC MD into NW DC for ES.

The caliber of public ES and strength of neighborhood community seems higher there, from what I’ve read on this forum.

It's a perfect place if your family goes to Blessed Sacrament (a great community fwiw) or if you are multigenerational country club and that's your happy place.

That said, grass is always greener I guess.

This is true for all of CCMD however we live on a dense street in CC with a great mix of private/public school kids and they DO mix and play. I currently have a child at RHES and the bus stop has lots of kids and RHES is a great community, very engaged PTA and parents and obviously the CC feeder schools are WONDERFUL.

Never base decisions on what you read in DCUM. I can’t believe I even have to say that.

This is my experience as a parent, living on a street near Woodbine. It’s so strange. We have so many young families now here, but between the country clubs and all the private schools, we barely see our neighbors. We see kids only coming out of their parents’ or nannies’ cars.
