We took our young elementary-school aged kids to Keukenhof during tulip season for their spring break, and the whole family really enjoyed it. It was way better than Brookside Gardens! The kids also enjoyed the canals and pancakes in Amsterdam (too young for Anne Frank house at the time). We combined it with two days in Brussels (kids wanted to see
Mannekin Pis and loved the chocolate shops and waffles) and two days in London. I think it’s worth the trip if the timing works. |
Would Keukenhof be too boring for middle school girls? Sometimes they act all mature and sometimes kiddish. Also is Anne Frank House okay to visit with middle school girls or a bit too sad? I don't want them being depressed few days into the trip after going there. |
If we fly in on April 24th to Brussels, is it better to do a day trip to Keukenhof first on 25th, then do Bruges as a second day trip and then head to Amsterdam? I'm wondering if anything will be left in tulip fields if we go in May to Amsterdam after visiting places in Belgium. |
Wow. Just... wow. |
We did both a few years ago on spring break. My middle school girl (and the rest of us, including a middle school boy, a 10 year old and 5 year old) all loved Keukenhof. DD especially loved it b/c there was Miffy stuff, and she and her friends are way into Miffy. As for Anne Frank House, I mean, my kids were very interested in going, and it was a large part of the reason we went to Amsterdam. But even if they weren't, there was no choice. It's important history and "too depressing" wouldn't have been an excuse (unless one of your kids has major mental health issues). |
It’s magical and well worth the day trip if you are in Amsterdam |
“I hate tours and am smug about that but by all means make like a tourist while I ‘travel.’” What a completely unnecessary and insufferable last sentence, barely masked with the “YMMV.” |
Know you should get your tickets for these things well in advance of your trip. |
Friends went this past week. They said the smell is overwhelming and incredible. The place is extremely crowded. Can be a bit tricky on timing, as another friend was there the week before and the tulips weren't yet open and it was not much to see. |
At least I provided information and possible alternative and clarified that I do not like tours so for OP to consider my suggestion in this light. What was your constructive contribution to this thread? |
Agree. Inspires eye rolls. |
We found that it added to our experience to re-read the Diary of Anne Frank on the plane ride over. |
But PP explained why the tours aren't necessary in this case. Why spend $139 when you can do this so easily on your own for much less money? Just a little planning and you can save money. But I guess y'all are made out of money and would rather throw money away instead of doing 20 minutes of research. |
also, you can do it in an afternoon. That's what my friends did. It's not a very long day trip, less than an hour from Amsterdam. Just try not to go on a friday or weekend for smaller crowds. |
We did it as a day trip, rented a car, and combined it with a visit to The Hague to see The Girl With The Pearl Earring. |
