Summer Rise

Glenstone is a really interesting one. My friend's daughter enjoyed that Summer Rise placement last year.
My kid was placed late (late May) and declined, because he ended up getting a part-time summer job.

Anyone hear back from Summer Rise this week? We have not heard a thing!

We got the camp counselor offer. It looked terrible given the transportation issues and what it was. It wasn't for student learning but free labor for MCPS. One week at MC in Rockville, and then I forget how many weeks in Silver Spring, all half days, neither close enough for easy drop off and pick up and public bus would be at least 90 minutes each way. And, zero flexibility and we are aready scheduled a few day camp not hearing from them. Them waiting this late makes it very difficult..

I know some kids did but nothing here.

Going into May now without a word.
Typical mcps failure. The program intake implies the student should not make other summer plans and then gives absolutely no word going into may when everything else is already full.

Sad trombone should be the District fight song

I think they need to revamp the program or at least the flyer. It makes it seem that kids will be exploring career based learning in something of their interest. And I get it, transportation could be an issue but I also think that students should understand that is a possibility before they sign onto the program. And the stipend part is iffy/not clear.

We can do transportation within reason. But, what was offered and half day was not reasonable in terms of time and distance. We specifically said no camps. I don’t care about the stipend as gas and time driving would be far more than the stipend. Each way was at least 35-45 minutes one way, so that’s twice a day round trip and there were only a few hours at the place so I’d be driving at least two hours a day or more.

They're unclear about the stipend because the new budget year starts on July 1, and last year they had to make a cut to the amount between program start and award of stipend. The cut was 5 or 10%, don't recall exactly b/c DC was not doing it for the stipend. In usual MCPS style, they're just not saying anything because they don't want flack if there's a change.

One should think of Summer Rise as a career exploration program, not a rocket science internship.

This exactly. It's a good program, but the interest has skyrocketed and placement opportunities have not. I think it should only be open to either rising juniors OR rising seniors only.

They could consider at least telling the students they didn't get a placement. Very poorly run program. The only communication since it's enrollment has been an email telling students and parents not to contact them.
Do better

Especially after advertising it so much.

Especially since the program is supposed to teach children business skills like, oh I don't know, how to communicate professionally.

Could it be like the real world where if you didn’t hear back it means you didn’t get placed?

Possibly. It would be courteous to notify the remaining candidates that all placements have been filled since these are minors who haven’t experienced much of the real world job market yet.
