Yes, it was pretty bad for my kid. DC was there in one of the few years of universal review and was accused of “stealing” magnet MS spots from CES kids. It was very us-and-them.

(DC was never evaluated for CES because of when we moved to MCPS, but it shouldn’t have mattered anyway. And they didn’t tell anyone they were admitted, but kids saw each other at admitted student nights.)

I had one child attend 8-9 years ago under the former principal, and they mixed specials and “Genius Hour” (Focused Instructional Time) and lunch/recess. Only core classes were with the Center kids. This made for a nice transition for my child as CCES was her home school and her friends were non magnet CCES. However, socially it was hard, as the Center and non Center kids didn’t mix much. When another child attended, it was right after the pandemic and the Walter Johnson cluster had been added (WJ, Whitman, BCC - I doubt local norming makes much of a difference in this Center) so they had to separated Center kids for lunch/recess and specials were separated. However, my child socialized with more non magnet CCES students because that year many CCES students got seats into the Center. That was simply because families didn’t want to change schools during the pandemic, but it turned to be really nice for the Center because a lot of the kids were local so my child would meet more CCES kids througj the local Center kids. I felt the school was more cohesive. I think they should allocate seats for the home school, the same way they do for the middle school and high school magnets.

Now that I know my kid is in for next year—

How big are the classes at the CES for 4th grade?
Does CCES still offer instrumental music for CES students?
Is there a bus for those not in walking distance? Where would we find stop information? Do most take the bus or are they driven?

CES classes (across MCPS) are always at maximum capacity, since central office offers spots from the waitlist if someone leaves. I think that means classes are 29 now.

I don’t remember class size, seemed about the same as any MCPS class
Yes instrumental music available
Bus picks up /drops off from home elementary school
My kid usually rode bus, the car line at CCES was challenging

Yes instrumental music available
Bus picks up /drops off from home elementary school
My kid usually rode bus, the car line at CCES was challenging

Yes to all of this. They also have access to 4/5 math.

The instrumental music teacher at CCES (and NCCES) is exceptional, but unfortunately is retiring at the end of the year. I am sure they will find someone else great, but it’s a bummer.

Agree. Mr. Bowling is outstanding. What a loss to CCES and NCC that he is retiring. But he certainly deserves it.

How is CES at CCES for someone on a 504 plan? Are writing assignments done by hand or typed?

When does MCPS teach computer keyboard typing? I have never seen any computer typing assignments yet for my 3rd grader yet.

It doesn't.

Have your kid use Typing Club -- it develops skills quickly.

Historically CCES has not been great for kids with special needs. I think that is changing with the new principal. Also noted that the CES acceptance form said any IDP could supersede placement.
