Any good bakeries anywhere?

Stela’s in Rockville is best for cake and cookies.

No one mentioned Praline, which I think is very good.

I think they are wildly overrated. Everything i’ve tried (which is a good amount because I always felt like I was missing something since everyone loves it) has been mediocre at best. Nothing special.

Un Je Ne Sais Quoi Has the best French pastries. My favorites are the almond and pistachio croissants, chocolate tart, and St honore. I also like livin the pie life in Arlington, especially the chocolate pie

Heidelberg is a local institution and has great prices. Last weekend I enjoyed a raspberry turnover for 2.60 and a cronut for 1.50

It’s not a bad idea to discourage new people.
Because the long lines are annoying during holidays.

Agree that je ne Sai’s quois is best in DC

Christophe okay and fresh baguette after that.

I wish there was a better pastry scene in town…Christophe, Fresh Baguette, Stella’s, and Heidelberg are all fine for traditional mainstream repertoire but there are so many more interesting and new ways to think about pastry now. Tatte and Rose Avenue and Saku Saku Flakerie at least veer towards a different palates and flavor profiles but execution isn’t always the best…. I have yet to find a great place for cake!

I feel that way about Heidelberg. Everything I've had from there tastes extra-processed.

And dry AF. Dry pastries and cake are the worst. And everything there is dry and pretty tasteless.

+2 Agree! Do not get the love for Heidelberg.

Agree, my extended family loves Stella's and I think it's terrible. Plus, the old guy that is always there is often rude. Like the PP, I wonder if I'm missing something.

There are some great bakery vendors (bread, croissants/laminated pastries) at the City of Falls Church farmers market on Saturdays - I think one of them is related to the family that used to have Cenan's in Vienna, which was so good.

For special treats, I like Chateau de Chantilly and Guava Artisanal Bakery. Victoria's Cakery in City of Fairfax for classic cakes. Living the Pie Life for the obvious Out of the Bubble Bakery in Springfield for allergies.

Agree that Heidelberg is very overrated, AND the service is so grumpy!
