another SAFETY meeting

Imma keep my DS in DCPS, where they know better.

Not sure about B-CC but mcps is desperately trying to hold onto the image that it doesn't need detectors because it is a "better" (you can fill in your adjective) school district than DC and Prince G's. They could have budgeted and installed non invasive detection systems a long time ago. Richer neighborhood/parents are fed up for having to give so much to the system. Elrich and company need to wake up too.

Students: "will detection system be at the front doors only? How will they monitor the other doors? There are 5 security guards and they are usually standing around talking are they cross checking 2500 student IDs with student? My friend's brother who is in HS still uses his middle school card as his id, someone used their metro card."

When you hear students' stories, you know you MUST include them in the conversations about their own schools. Also you MUST include families who do not join a school's listserv into security discussions. This should be happening by Central Office not a volunteer run PTSA.

Which leaders are NOT afraid to attend the meeting with Councilmember Friedson?

What safety measures were implemented after the last meeting in Jan 2024 held at BCC HS?

What will metal detectors do?
exactly! What will metal detectors do? They will effectively give these whining parents a false sense of security which will shut them up for a little while.

Layers of security. Not metal detectors alone. But as many have said, the current rules and policies need to be enforced. Doesn't sound like they have been. Is it actually practical for a handful of guards to effectively look at 3000 IDs at arrival? Are students getting to school an hour early to get in line?

we don’t need trackers in our kids.

What trackers in your kids?

They should ban all brooms, swiffers, mops, etc as well.

Too late
Cameras are already tracking them

They pretend they care about safety. If you did then you would not ignore or retaliate against the teachers when we tell you of violent assaults and rapes when we see/ hear about them.

My kid already gets up at 6:15 to get to school. I don’t really want him getting up an hour earlier to stand in line for a metal detector. If I thought McPS had the funds and could do this efficiently, sure. But currently they don’t have unlocked bathrooms, many rooms don’t have functioning HVAC,, etc. I’d like basics like a place to pee and a room that is not dangerously hot/cold first.
Would they hire additional staffing for the metal detectors or would they pull tjem from other places so that none of the bathrooms are open? Do they need X-rays in addition to the metal detectors? Won’t other things in the bag set off the metal detector?
These schools are just too damn big. Getting 3000 kids into school in a 20 minute window is just not going to work with metal detectors. They can’t even check the IDs. I guess I’d be interested to see how well this works in DCPS.

I’m not a fan of metal detectors at all. I think they will be expensive and make kids late to class. I also think savvy kids who are determined to do harm can find ways around them. I thought ghost guns evade detection. This is not to say I think they’re useless. They might turn things up here and there. I just don’t think they are the big solution. I’m not sure what the answer is but we need a multi-pronged approach. We do need to do something. I know in some districts clear backpacks are required. Maybe that could be one facet. More SROs could be another.

It is not only about one abatement mechanism, but maybe the schools need detectors, clear bags, alarms at other doors, sensors, more trained guards (not 70year olds playing door guard), more services for students and staff. All of that = $$$. The county council NEED to be involved in discussion. Where is the BOE? Are they coming to any safety meeting? How about students and staff? They should feel comfortable to come forward to discuss without fear, but majority do NOT.

Who scheduled a meeting on Fat Tuesday? Get wild shouting at the meeting??

Taylor should drop whatever prior engagements he claims he has to attend. Do your job, Taylor. You not showing up at a meeting on a topic that your constituents said is a priority is NOT a good image for MCPS. If you don't want the job, bye.
