Maybe Trump will decide we need to take over Germany next.

It's going to be a blood bath for every American and Japanese auto maker. Half the brands we see on the road today will not be here in 5 years once the Chinese EVs are allowed into the US.

Good. Break the union! $49,000 is the average cost of a new car. Chinese cars are like $14,000 to $20,000. People should be yelling and screaming to allow these cars in.

You do realize that the reasons these Chinese EVs are so ‘cheap’ are because the Chinese government heavily subsidizes the industry with cheap loans that are often forgiven, low cost metals and energy, lousy labor enforcement keep costs down, and crappy consumer safety. Cheap Chinese EVs are breaking down and catching fire all over Asia. If you hate your family, got ahead and park one of these EVs in your garage.

You said the same thing about Tesla EVs. This is the same thing they said about the VW and all those little Japanese cars that got great gas miles back in the day.

Why don’t we let the free market decide what the people want and not some MAGA government bureaucrat?

What? This is ridiculous. If you think people should feel shame for driving a friken car which had been sold for over a decade now you need your head checked.

NYT "The Daily" podcast has a story about this today, it's worth a listen. China has overtaken South Korea, Japan, and Germany in auto exports and 25% of the vehicles they export are EVs.

Gretchen Whitmer has also been talking about this lately because she's worried about what the introduction of Chinese EVs to the US market will do to the US auto industry. She actively supports Trump's Chinese tariffs even as she disagrees with almost everything else Trump does because she has seen what has happened to the European market due to Chinese auto imports and is scared of what it means for Detroit.

Elon Musk sucks and personally I'll never buy a product he sells ever (thankfully I have never been wealthy enough to buy a Tesla, lol). But Tesla is struggling in Europe for the same reason that European automakers are struggling -- Chinese imports. And Tesla is struggling more because it's all in on the EV market and that's where China is competing most aggressively, with less expensive options. Turns out Germans can't afford Teslas either!

Yeah, no matter how nice Chinese EVs would be you still won't have access to Tesla charging network which is the reason Tesla is plausible as an all-around vehicle and not just a local use commuter vehicle. With a tesla it's like filling up at a gas station, there are chargers at every rest stop. We tried other electric cars as rentals on moderate duration road trips and it was complete PITA. Alternative charging stations network is anemic and even if you find one it's often off the road requiring you to waste time getting off the highway and then there may not be enough working chargers. We had this problem in CA and along the 95 corridor, not somewhere in the cornfields or the mountains. We were looking longingly at all the tesla chargers we passed by and it was a no-brainer that other EV manufacturers just don't stand a chance.

If you make purchasing decisions based on the beliefs of people who work there, boy are you in for a surprise.

He doesn't "work there." He is the face of the brand. He IS the brand. That's a big difference and people should feel free to vote with their wallets. Plus, the cars blow up and aren't serviced very well.

Do you realize these cars have been around for many years long before any political extravaganza? Are you suggesting people should sell the cars that are working for them that they already paid for and take a loss to make a political statement?

Elon Musk’s net worth falls below $400 billion for the first time this year after Tesla’s 27% stock avalanche
https://fortune.com/2025/02/11/elon-musk-net-worth-400-billion-tesla-stock/
After reaching a net worth of more than $486 billion in December, Elon Musk’s wealth has sunk below $400 billion for the first time in 2025. Tesla—where Musk derives about 60% of his wealth—has had an abysmal year. Waning demand and Musk’s continued controversial foray into politics have helped drive the stock down 27%.
Elon Musk has lost nearly $90 billion of his wealth in less than two months, pushing his net worth below $400 billion for the first time this year, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, as Tesla weathers a double-digit stock slump.

Because who da FAQ wants to drive a Nazi mobile?

Do not care if you bought earlier. Every time you use a Tesla charger it gives money to a Nazi, fascist, scumbag weirdo. YOU are part of the problem when you buy Tesla.

This.

We need Chinese EVs in our market. Americans need to travel the world. Tesla is an after thought as well as most American brands. You can't blame the Chinese for our competing US automakers. Tesla has gotten even more govt handouts than BYD. Being the Chinese csrs to the US market.

So much hypocrisy from the USA. Supposedly the defenders of capitalism and free markets, yet the govt makes it impossible to own a car from abroad for a reasonable price simply because they can't handle the fact they got out competed. Lame.

Tesla was down 50% in Europe. They have not changed or updated their products in almost ten years. Plus European do not like unelected extremists.

I think Musk was just trying to stop the Chinese cars for coming in to the US. If the Chinese car are allowed in here they will dominate the market. A $14-$25k priced car will sell and dominate the market even if it is an EV. Average new car(gas, EV, whatever) cost in America was $48k. The Chinese are treating cars like phone. They have plans available to trade out your old car for a new better one after a year. It is really insane.

That’s terrible for the environment . I’m horrified.

No they are not. Stop with the Musk propaganda.

Cybertrucks parts are flying off and the truck is unreliable in rain. His last rocket blew up again. Go on and support the non inventor that;s right Musk never invented anything himself while he steals you blind.

Tesla sales in February were down 76% in Germany compared to a year ago. In fact, sales dropped 41% in 2024 compared to 2023, and it doesn't look like they'll recover there anytime soon, as 94% of 100,000 Germans who took part in a recent survey said they won't buy a Tesla.
