So here's the deal -- the type of student that goes to UGA is quite different than 10-15 years ago. UGA has obviously been a big draw for Georgia residents, especially since HOPE started in the early 90s, however, it wasn't until around 2010 until things really started to take off for UGA. Admissions has become much more competitive and it's no longer a backup school for many high ability kids in the state. It recruits top talent from Georgia's high schools and it's become very desirable for OOS kids as well. The kids still party (all college students do everywhere you go), but you're going to get a mix of all type of students at UGA. 35,000+ students tends to give you a little bit of everything!

This is true because before the 2010s+ every student in Georgia could go for free if they had a 3.0 or higher. It was definitely a back up school for many of us who lived in Georgia, but also a place where all of our family went so a tradition to be proud of as well. It is a more diverse student population now, but the vibe of Athens is more like the vibe of Charlottesville versus Blacksburg.

Is Blacksburg more provincial?

Blacksburg near campus is very much like any other VA campus... go out a few miles and its farmland. That is not the vibe on campus though, AT all.

It might be the vibe for VT’s agriculture school

True, but that is less than 10% of the school population.

Have you been to DC or any city lately? It’s a problem everywhere.

Its not a typical issue at many college campuses. Kids looking at UVA and UGA are not also looking at going to school in a major city.

If you’re triggered by the sight of a homeless person you’ll want to avoid UVA, Texas, UCLA and any school not extremely rural. You can’t keep your kid in a bubble forever but High Point has a gate if that would make you feel better.

What is wrong with you?

Sophistication you are sick

And stupid instate at VT vs GA you are a moron

Not stupid if you can afford it. UGA is sophisticated like UVA.

Nationally UGA is the better name. No one cares about VT outside of this area.

Hahaha this is ridiculous. VT is very well known. And for engineering it is thought of as a very good school all over.

Yes but UGA has a better ranking.

I am curious then why such a high percentage of the elite Atlanta private school kids (Lovett, Pius X, etc.) not only don't pick UGA but actually 83%+ don't pick any in-state college.

Is it perhaps none of the schools feel like they are going anywhere for college (which I completely get for Emory and GT...because you literally aren't going anywhere)?

Blacksburg is a cute little college town, and Christiansburg is about 15 min. away for things like big box stores, etc. But the rural, mountainous surroundings are gorgeous and a big draw for many students who aren't interested in urban environments. I wouldn't call it "provincial," though.

There is nothing "sophisticated about UGA or UVA. They're just colleges, like all the rest. Also, you're responding to a troll ^^.

That comment made me laugh. Here are the VT alumni chapters, located all over the world:

Call it a hunch, but when your parents are paying close to $40k/year for high school tuition, maybe they don't need to save the money that is afforded by in-state tuition rates and the HOPE/Zell Miller scholarship programs. Perhaps these kids want to leave Georgia and go experience another part of the country? If your family isn't bothered by paying for OOS, why not?

Possibly…but people keep claiming that UGA is different nowadays and pulling the best and brightest in GA, even all the wealthy kids.

Georgia resident with 2024 graduate. Plenty of top students whose families can be full pay at privates opt for UGA. Because UGA offers a combination of things that most top privates lack- active social life, great college town, warm weather, big time sports, etc.

Again…Lovett and others publish these stats and 83%+ of their graduates are going OOS. I don’t know where the 17% in state are enrolling but I assume it’s spread across UGA, Emory and GA Tech for the most part.

That 17% seems much smaller than I would expect, that’s all.
