UGA honors is more impressive than Gatech. Maybe slightly less than Emory but it's close. |
I have had two kids at UGA. One was business and one went to UGA as pre-med and is now Pre-Pa. Both absolutely love it. The town, their friends, the distance from home and getting to meet so many new people - it's been fabulous. For Pre-med, here are the problems, though we know several who are in medical, dental, pa or vet school now. 1. Chemistry is ridiculous at UGA. The complaints on the parent board are legendary. Be ready for tears. Saying that, my kid got As in all of them. There were curves and she worked hard. It is miserable but doable, and that's really what you hear at every college. 2. The Pre-med advising is not great. 3. There aren't a ton of research opportunities. 4. There aren't a ton of volunteer opportunities. Athens is a small town so it's very competitive to even be able to volunteer at a hospital. Or shadow. Or get a job. So...you have to be extra resourceful to be pre-med at UGA - looking or opportunities to boost resume. Staying proactive in class etc. |
Duke and Vanderbilt most definitely are worth it as long as you do not have to take out huge loans |
This . The resources are much lower once you go outside the T20 privates. Premeds at the top schools have opportunities that are often paid, and for many of them there is a med school affiliated with the school and on or close to campus. The size is smaller so there is less competition to work with a professor or in the hospital. Even below average students get into med school. You get what you pay for and there are big reasons UGA offers such big discounts to out of state students. |
+1 UGA honors is #1 and they now have a medical school. |
| To OP: As a mom of a Texas auto admit who is pre-med, I do not think UT is a great pre-med school. It's a great university and what many kids want socially, geographically, etc. But for pre-med, it is huge and has all the big school problems when you are looking at pre-med (lack of research, difficulty getting classes, hard to connect with teachers to get letters of recommendation). I think if you are pre-med + either Dean's Scholars or Health Science Scholars, then it is good for pre-med. Just my opinion. I know several UT grads in medical school now so it is not impossible. |
| Sounds like your kid could get a free ride to Bama. And they have a good medical school and lots of reserves opportunities. |

Great choice ... congratulations!

Following. (This is my kid, just swapping in USC for Duke and Wisconsin for Texas.) He's really excited about the early acceptance to Morehead, which looks terrific. It's a super-high floor at a really attractive price. We're looking for a good time to get him down there for a day or two while school is in session so he can get some sense of the vibe of the place and how excited he'd be about going there. |
Do you have more information and/or a link on the admissions-preference point? TIA |
Never heard this about UGA as well - there is no priority. |
lol. The song was written by the bass player who didn’t want his girlfriend to move back home, which was Rockville. Not really intended as a diss but people love to hate on Rockville so it is perceived that way. |
| Friend of mine’s son graduated from UGA in 2023. He had a blast. Got a great job right away. Athens seemed like a fun town. Definitely a good choice! |
Oh, how this brings back memories of college for me! REM was my soundtrack. |
+100 UGA is T20 for public universities. |
