| I'm from Georgia - UGA used to be the party school where everyone went. It is now hard to get into and is a good school. Has a great business school and veterinarian as well. Athens is a wonderful blue dot small city of low-key fun. And at least when I was young, REM members used to just always be out hanging with the rest of us. But seriously, Georgia is purple - Atlanta is pretty blue. Think of it as a state where your kids vote will matter. I would not do Alabama, Ole Miss or FSU but I would do Georgia. Plus, cost of living is less down there so you'll save some money. |
Years ago, I had a friend who transferred from UGA. Apparently there is a lot of partying and also back then the gender ratio was off. Apparently there were a lot more girls than boys and the scene for girls at UGA was really difficult. Again, this info is secondhand and from over twenty years ago but it still is worth considering at least. |
+1. We are from the DMV but lived in ATL for about 10 years for work. Love the area and Athens. These areas are purple, like PP said. People aren't overly political in day to day life there. Your kids will be fine and may even grow as a person by living outside the DMV bubble. |
| UGA is a good school in the T50 according to the US News cabal |

GA’s laws don’t reflect “purple” state
Hard pass |
Go to the political forum please. |
I would not consider a report from 20 years ago to be relevant now. So much has changed (for any school - not UGA specific). |
| Absolutely she should consider it. It's a wonderful school and the cost she will be paying makes it very attractive. It has a supportive & successful alumni group, Athens is a great college town and it's known for happy students. |

REM got their start in Athens, GA. However, they also dissed Rockville so it's a toss-up:

My friend's son went to UGA Honors and then to Harvard Law after spending an additional year at Cambridge.
She will be around plenty of bright students. |
| I think major is a factor. If interested in stem, particularly engineering or CS, UGA is not as strong as other areas. |
| It’s a great school. Go to the cheapest school you can if pre med or pre law. |
My kid is considering both those paths and the UGA merit offered makes it very attractive. |
Don't attend so it is one less person for my deferred kid. LOL kidding sort of. My other kid is there now, and it is absolutely amazing!! We all love everything about it. I am guessing if your DD gets into Duke or maybe TX she won't want UGA but I do know a few who chose UGA over TX. I can't say enough good things about it- and it's very affordable (mine also got merit but it's affordable even without) She should be thrilled!! It is getting quite hard (obv not at Duke level but prob more fun!!) |
| If anything amazing options actually, UGA is also opening a med school next year and your DD would have priority for admissions as she is an honors student. Take the offer |
