Do you like Taylor Swift?

I became a fan with Folklore and Evermore. A lot of Midnights really grew on me. I enjoy TTPD, especially the 2nd half “anthology” section. It seems like a lot of people haven’t heard anything she’s written in the past ten years. “Shake It Off” was a loooooong time ago.

The radio hits and earlier stuff are occasional listens (usually with my kids who we avoid the more mature stuff with), but there are certain songs that are on heavy rotation for me. Reputation is fun. I watched the Eras tour movie and loved it. Listening to the shift in perspective as she matures is fascinating.

Her personality— I think she’s messy and interesting. She pretty fully owns her flaws as a person and romantic partner (and a dancer, lol). Not getting her current fashion choices at all, but I’m also ten years older than her and deeply uncool, so.

She needs to pay more attention to melody and harmony and less attention to lyrics in her writing. Her earlier stuff was enjoyable when she was more produced.

I tire of the idea that the only way to express your femininity is through ice skating costumes and gowns.

She can’t dance.

She and her parents have done an amazing job with marketing and playing to her talents.

Odd take.
If she likes what she’s wearing that’s all that matters.

She’s well aware she’s not a dancer. She has an entire music video poking fun at herself/her dancing.

Of course. In my “odd” mind, what she enjoys isn’t all that matters because she has entire bookshelves full of books for young girls and she is contributing to the idea that to be a woman is to be in thigh- high boots, sparkly gowns and ice skating costumes.

All of which can contribute to young girls developing a sense that what they look like is more important than who they are. Taylor is open about the fact that she had/has an eating disorder, but she seems a bit clueless what contributed to it and how her image can help or hinder the growth of self esteem in young girls.

YMMV of course, but that is my “odd take.”

Disagree that she’s clueless.
I think it’s great she’s at a healthy weight and feels confident wearing whatever she wants. And while she may choose short skirts and high boots quite often, it’s not all she wears.

I know plenty of girls (my own daughter included) who are in no way hindered or negatively impacted by what Taylor or any other celebrity wears.

Music? No.
Personality? I had no opinion, but since she started with the football guy I have a very negative opinion. Even if she truly cares about him, she should have better judgment about the football damage to him and condoning the whole sport

Unapologetically love her.

Both music and personality

Of course

She literally just fed a bunch of people , treats her employees well and is a good human

What’s not to like?

Musk and Trump have never fed a sole but their fat fingers

I think her music is okay. I feel like she has a deep need to create a certain image of herself with fans as one of them. She uses her fans identifying with her to advance her music sales and her image. I feel the same way about that as I did about Oprah when she had her talk show and always talked about her weight. Her hook was that we were supposed to identify with her weight struggles and want to watch her because she was like us - except she was not like us because she was worth hundreds of millions and had a national TV show. Taylor is basically the millennial musical Oprah.

This is a really interesting comparison I'd never though of. I think I like her music more than you do, but I have always been put off by her relationship with her fans and how she feeds/encourages it, and this offers some insight into why I don't like it.

She seems like kind of an oddball and I don’t care for her music that much anymore. But I don’t have anything against her. I like her country music and her earlier pop but my interest dropped off after Reputation.

I don't like her music. I didn't even know who she was when I changed the station when her songs came on. That was probably "Teardrops On My Guitar."

I like what I hear about her donations on her tour stops, the bonuses given to her crew, etc. She certainly seems to have business sense, too.

Lol

Sorry meant to add she has written zero memorable or moving melodies and her lyrics read like my journal from 7th grade. She is so dull and uncharismatic I can’t take it.
