AP Java doesn't count for a tech credit, right?

My kid is taking AP CS Java this year, and in ParentVue it does not have the 'TE' indicator that other tech credit courses have. In Course History, it is filed under Elective rather than Technology Education.

That may be if they already fulfilled their tech credit. Check world languages, same thing, if you take more than two credits of it, any additional world language credit will be under electives.

Oh I’m really upset about this. I have two kids who took comp sci principals (which is a tremendously stupid class for anyone with CS knowledge) solely to get the tech credit. One maybe was before the change but the other was just last year. It really drives me nuts that McPS is not more transparent about this stuff. They constantly send emails and texts with worthless information but not information like this that would actually be helpful!

I wouldn't assume that MSDE's preapproved list necessarily means that MCPS's graduation requirements have been changed. The current year's course bulletin still says these are the courses that fulfill the tech credit:

code usually used in the county: ITC2084

code for tech credit: ITC2081

Counselor will need to complete paperwork to change the code used so that it will count towards technology credit. I would ask your counselor before you sign up for the class to make sure that this is still allowed.

So many layers. It is ridiculous that the student and counselor even have to do paperwork for this course. And is that the same at all schools that offer AP Java?

DS had this issue and his counselor fixed it. I found the email his CS teacher sent to the counselor to get it resolved (below).

My takeaway was that MCPS marked only the pre-req as a tech credit in their catalog assuming everyone took the pre-req.

I was talking with [DS], the course code he is signed up for is AP CSP but in the PW course, not the TE course, he did not take Foundations of CS in middle school because he was in the Magnet Program at Clemente. We wanted to make sure that he is going to get credit for taking this class and it count as his Tech Credit. Can you check that he has a tech credit already or possibly change the course code for last semester and this semester so he gets the credit?

Anyway, you are describing a different problem.

CS Principles (CSP) is always a tech credit everywhere, but if your school messed that up, good that you fixed it.

AP CS A Java is a different class that is more ambiguous about tech credit-- state sas yes, MCPS says no, some schools say yes.

ITC2007A Java is not TE in the bulletin

2084A Principles says TE in the bulletin,

2083A Foundations says TE also,

and 2081A is not in the bulletin at the all.

It's like that other post about another course, forgot if it was math or something else. When a parent asked counselor, counselor says they can take the AP class. When parent and student asked that course's Lead Teacher, they were told to take the Honors first then the AP.

Our counselor is pretty responsive and has been fairly proactive about reaching out with opportunities for various things (also Churchill). They've been able to give informative advice and are willing to work with our kid to get what he needs/wants. We'll see about the tech credit, but I wouldn't be terribly concerned if he has to take another tech class; knowing my kid, if he was forced to take a non AP or HON tech class he'd do it over the summer. Though it would be better to have it waived or subbed. He can ask.

They don't offer AP over the summer, they offer tech over the summer. When my DD took it, it was "advanced" so got weighting. Not sure what the situation is now.

Are they trying to gatekeep Java just for very interested students so others aren’t doing it just for the tech credit? I know it’s a tougher class to find qualified teachers for.
