Did your FCPS ES have outdoor recess today?

Anonymous
Both of mine were out yesterday, Blacktop only. They said it was a skating rink. One was purposely sliding. Playground will be a mess for a good while. I was surprised they went out but glad because probably no outside time the rest of the week. SACC is likely indoors for a good while as they are even more risk adverse than the school.

Great. Take the outside after school.

They get home at 4:30. By the time they get home, put their stuff away, and get a snack, it's getting dark, but thanks. The schools are REQUIRED to provide recess, PP, I'm not asking for a lot. I'm sorry for your children that you're such a wimp about this.

Maybe if you structured your day in such a fashion that you’re not posting on the rando complaint forum at almost midnight, you could get your kids outside for a few afternoon minutes.

The school is providing recess, just not in the way you want it. My kids also get home at 4:30, which means school starts later and there’s plenty of time for morning outdoor fresh air w/ family. We also manage an evening walk w the dog and use a flashlight if it’s dark.

Stop asking school to do everything you aren’t doing as a parent. You should try toughening up and getting creative if you’re going to complain about school not doing the same.

This is a great response! 👍 The PP is complaining about what the school "should" be doing, but he/she is not doing anything to better the situation for his/her kids (since he/she seems to think his/her kids must have fresh air AT SCHOOL for it to be considered recess).

I also think it's outright hilarious that he/she says the PP is a wimp, but he/she doesn't want kids out in the dark. Pot, meet kettle.

Outside recess is not the requirement.

My kids were told they won't be going outside until the snow melts from the playground and temps are above freezing. We have a huge issue at our school with kids not bringing warm clothing to go outside in so if the temp is below 32°, they stay inside.

I wish they did get them outside but we make up the lack of outdoor time after school instead.

Our school goes outside as long as there isn’t a wind chill warning. If there is a wind chill advisory I believe they shorten the recess.

There are a few fairly large covered patio type areas that classes sometime a go to if the playground is a mess like it is now. When the blacktop is cleared they can use that and the covered areas.

Yeah, my kids don’t get home from bus stop until 4:30. The school has no plan to clear the blacktop so my kids are spending recess on screens. They definitely need some fresh air but it looks like they will have to spend January indoors because the snow won’t melt anytime soon.

Mine went out. I'd think it's not just plowing, but also if it got lots of sun over the weekend when the temps warmed up. That helped melt the layer of ice.

They just did 10-15 minutes outside since it was pretty cold. But those kids are COOPED up so I that's better than nothing.

We had indoor recess on Tuesday and Wednesday due to the windchill and many children without coats and gloves. But we did have recess other days. They had great fun playing in the snow and worked in groups and made really large snowmen.

The schools are not required to provide OUTDOOR recess.

Yeah, my kids have had a week with no outdoor recess. Likely won’t be outside next week either. It’s a lot of screen time.

No outdoor recess all this week. We tried walking home from school several days but most of the sidewalk are treacherous and we have up.

Apparently. I’m sure they’ll be calling for Michelle Reid’s termination next, since she also apparently controls the weather and whether kids have warm enough clothes with them.
