Glimpse is a 90-second video with no editing filmed directly on InitialView's platform/ How did your daughter use apps, tech, and social media? |
+2 I was wondering the same thing. |

DD accepted to Brown with video - hers was very simple and was about her love of legos and how they have fostered her passion for her major. Didn’t do glimpse because of the fee but submitted through the portal. Not sure if it really made an impact. In my opinion, her essays were much stronger.
On a different note, asked the AO at Bowdoin about their video on a tour there and they said they mostly use it to confirm English fluency and make sure you are who you say you are. Not sure if this applies anywhere else though. |
So true. I crack up at the people who think all these are "professionally" produced. Kids are just savvy with the apps and software and phones. I help my clients brainstorm because that's where kids may need a little help -- hard to talk about yourself. Where to start, what to touch on and all. But, it's all them! |
DP Brown lets you choose Glimpse or upload your own 2 min video. PP probably just used Glimpse as a catch all. May not even know that there were 2 ways to do it! |

Which schools really value the Glimpse videos?
How are they used in the admissions scoring/committee? 60-90 (no edit) Glimpse: Bennington College, Binghamton University, Boston University, Brown University, Colby College, Colgate University, College of the Holy Cross, Connecticut College, Duke University, Lawrence University, Marymount Manhattan College, Middlebury College, Northwestern University, Occidental College, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Rhodes College, Rice University, Rose-Hulman Institute, Swarthmore College, Union College, University of Chicago, University of La Verne, Vanderbilt University, Washington University in St. Louis, and Whitman College |
With Brown being one exception, most of these schools have never used videos in their admission process before. From the podcast, it sounds like they don't really know how - or even whether - they will be used in admissions scoring/committee. |

CMC also now has a video. Doesn't look like its part of Glimpse though?
Optional Video Response After submitting your application, you will receive instructions by email from the CMC Admission Office on how to submit an optional two-minute video. Similar to interviews, the optional video response gives you an opportunity to tell us more about yourself beyond the information you provided in your application. The most compelling video responses have a genuine voice and highlight your thoughtfulness and authenticity. While the video response is not required, if you were unable to schedule an interview, the video response is a great opportunity for you to tell us about yourself beyond what you provided in your application. An important part of Claremont McKenna College's mission is preparing students for responsible leadership. How do you define "responsible leadership," and how have you demonstrated responsible leadership in your family, community, or school? At CMC, we promote the understanding of public policy issues as it makes our students and alumni more effective leaders in their respective career fields. What is a public policy issue (whether locally, nationally, or globally) that you feel passionately about, and how do you hope to address it either in the present or the future? How can CMC assist you with addressing the issue? The Marian Miner Cook Athenaeum is the heart of intellectual and social engagement at Claremont McKenna College, bringing students, faculty, and staff closer together through active discussion on a daily basis. If you could invite someone to speak at the Athenaeum, who would they be, what questions would you ask them, or what topic would you want to discuss with them at the Athenaeum dinner? Collaboration involves working with people towards a common goal or project. It is a challenging skill that develops with time and experience. We want to learn more about the challenges you have encountered with collaboration. Tell us about when a collaborative effort you were involved in was challenging or even failed. What did your experience teach you about collaboration, and share how it has informed your leadership style? |
Yes, I remember this from applying to Brown as well. To me, it really skirts the line of looking at someone and seeing whether they are URM and judging whether or not they are wealthy, so I am not a fan. There are studies that show that people tend to gravitate toward people who are conventionally attractive also. A super selective school like Brown should consider the cost (time and $$) to the over 90% of applicants who will not get into the school. |
