What AP classes did your kid take in 10th grade?

There is no need to push a 15 year old into all these college level classes. College is for college. High school is for teenagers. If your kid is a very, very gifted kid, that’s one thing, but why make them work harder than they ever will in the future, for the most part? In college they take classes several hours a day, in high school it’s classes all day and then the extra hours of work. For what? Take the parent ego out of it and let your kid be a teenager.

If your kid did the full IB diploma, then you are not really in a position to lecture other parents to "let teens be teens" and not take AP classes.

AP is the most rigorous course load at most FCPS high schools, just like IB is the most rigorous course load at a handful of schools.

You putting your teen in the full IB program then criticizing parents for signing their kids for AP classes is a pot meet kettle moment.

High school students do much of the work in class. These college level classes are specifically intro level classes, and often not even replacements for college classes, when the students retake the same course more intensively in college.

Anyone have details on AP English seminar yet and how it differs from English 10 honor? Do AP classes use skills based grading?

My sophomore took AP Pre-calc, AP World and AP Human Geo. She really enjoyed the AP Human Geo class and said the exam was easy. She thought the World exam was tougher than pre-calc. 5s on all exams.

No. Mine did AP World, AP Precalc, AP Stats and AP CS A. She was able to do this by doing summer PE. Her other classes were Chem HN, English 10 HN, nd French 3. She had all As and got a 5 on all the AP exams except Stats where she got a 4.

Can someone provide details on AP World and AP CS A?

World - how much reading/writing and what are the tests like?

CS A - Are they actually writing code and debugging or are they just looking at code on paper and trying to figure out what the output is? Thanks.

Is there a lot of writing? Boring? Too much work?

AP world history was fun for my 10th grader. Yes, prepping for the exam improves writing skills. It's not all about memorizing facts, but thinking analytically about what events caused what effects, identifying historical trends, etc. It helps keeping with current developments, or at least develop that habit.

Not in FCPS, but my 10th grader is taking AP pre-calculus, AP seminar/english 10, and AP Spanish language. It’s a lot of work, but not too much, even with a year round sport & some other ECs. I would imagine it makes a difference which AP classes the kid takes.

All these APs are a stressful waste of time; please don’t subject your poor kid to this unnecessary pain.

DD is planning to take AP World History, AP Micro/Macro, and AP pre-calc. SHE wants to take them. She is of the opinion that if she has to take something anyway, why not do the AP version, and get more out of it? So, she's taking AP World History instead of World History 2, AP micro/macro in lieu of Personal Finance, and well, the pre-calc is next in her math sequence. I ask her a million times if she's sure she can handle it, because she's a math/science kid, and doesn't particularly like liberal arts or writing, but she's sure, and says she can always drop down if it's too much.
