TBF, a lot of the EE who come here kicka$$ in academics, as so do many Asian immigrants. The academic bar in the US is set pretty low.

The only reason people come here is because the US is a wealthy country; lots of money to be made. There are several reasons why this is the case, but it's not because the US K-12 education system is the best. Far from it. I would even say that most colleges here aren't that great, but again, the money and opportunities are here, so people want to come here.

TBF most Americans are upset about the low bar too. But instead we're focusing on teaching kids how to use rulers because ONE kid in the entire class can't figure it out. We will halt the learning of 24 other kids just so one kid doesn't fall behind. Equity. I think this is the legacy of No Child Left Behind.

Switch schools. DC used learned how to use these in elementary school.

How long do you think it took to learn how to use a ruler? 20 minutes?

Literally the OP said
It turns out, many kids didn’t know what a protractor was or how to use the ruler correctly.

Moving ahead with instruction when MANY KIDS don't know something is poor practice. It's not like it takes students hours to learn/refresh this skill.

Hmm, I don’t recall ever using a protractor until geometry, but I could be wrong

If I had fewer children or more energy, I would've been able to supplement them up to the standards of the 1980s/1990s publics, but as it is I threw in the towel and sent them to private. With less money, it would've been homeschooling.

+1

Our public education system is circling the drain, but school boards only want to shovel more $$ into the furnace of DEI.

Sad but true.

Is the department of education behind some of this current obsession with DEI / DEIA ?

A teacher was just posting about the school-district policies on discipline (or, lack of discipline):

She was a teacher. She wrote “My "go to" punishment (after serious chat, etc.) was to move desk away from other kids, but still in the classroom. Also, a minute or two standing with the teacher during recess. Sometimes, more than a minute or two. That is no longer allowed--a teacher cannot take away ANY recess.

I agree that kids need recess. However, teachers also need some tools that mean something to a child.

Another thing, if a child throws a temper tantrum and is uncontrollable, the teacher is not allowed to remove him from the class. Instead, the teacher takes the rest of the class out of the classroom. I've talked to teachers who have had to do this more than once a day. This is disruptive and keeps the other kids from learning.”

With all the wailing about MAGAs and education, can I just point out: it was not the MAGAs who came up with these insane policies. It wasn’t even the republicans.

It was Obama’s “Dear Colleague” letter.

Google it.

Can you explain the Obama “Dear Colleague” letter? A brief google search told me that 1) Biden was primarily behind it and 2) the letter deals with sexual harassment claims.
