Middle/high school pick-up parents: this is what you actually do with your time?

Not sure how it is where you live, but near us if you are over two miles from the school, you don't get a school bus. We are over two miles so have one, but I would absolutely not let my kids walk home from school 2 miles away having to cross the major roads on the way there. Same with bikes. There have been serious accidents.

I have picked up my daughter from school because she had to go straight to her after school activity. In our case, I'd show up pretty much at the tail end so I don't have to wait, but there have been a time or two when I had to show up early to make sure that we'd be at the head of the line, and able to get out quickly to make it to something like a doctor's appointment on time.

So stupid. I'm South Asian, so there is no Addison Grace here. She doesn't eat Chick-Fil-A except very occasionally, and there is no 5 hours of dance practice (or any other practice), and certainly no 'no homework life'. Get a life.

We live across the street from our ES and the pick up line always forms at least 30+ minutes before dismissal time. It gets so bad the narrow main street gets backed up for a couple of hundred yards after the side street is full. It's crazy! The school has a very efficient process so it only takes about 10 minutes for the line to clear out. So people will sit on the line for 30 minutes to really save very little time.

My fifth grader takes the bus which is available to anyone more than a half mile away. He takes the bus in the morning and when the weather is good he and his friends walk home, about two miles. When the weather is bad he takes the bus. If he stays late for sports I will pick him up but there is no line. I have more important things to do then sit in a line for 30 minutes given I've got three younger kids two of whom walk to and from school. There the line is ridiculous as well.

I get where OP is coming from. It’s so insanely stupid to wait in a pick up line for an hour. Kids can walk, there is a bus, or you could pull in 10 min after dismissal and be in and out in less than a minute. I truly don’t get it either. Even if you have the time, who would want to spend their time sitting idle in a school parking lot for a hour for no good reason at all.
