recommend a Mexican location that would be great for a family year abroad

As long as you keep a good head on your shoulders, take the same precautions you would in any big US city, don’t do anything illegal, and you will be just fine. Depending on the town certainly safer than living in Baltimore (by a lot) and frankly a lot of parts of DC. Now for the actual response:

Los Barriles in B.C.S is spectacular. Lots of expats but not touristy at all. It’s between La Paz and Cabo on the Sea of Cortez. I’ve been going there my whole life. Never ever had a single issue or scary moment. The people are warm and wonderful. The geography is stunning. Across the Peninsula is Todos Santos on the Pacific Side. A little more built up and attracts a lot of artists etc.

Check both out. I’m as gringo as it gets and I’ve never once ever had anything remotely sketchy happen in all my time in these places (probably about 8 years of my life total). I do speak Spanish, but most of the Mexicans’ English in that part of the country is better than the Yanks’ Spanish.

I think it is a very different comparison. I would not move to Baltimore nor would I recommend it to a person asking where to move to in the US. A big difference between the US and Mexico is that here the police have power. You can go to the police if there is an issue. In Mexico you are on your own, there are no recourse. That is true in many South American countries, but in Mexico it is worse because the Cartels controls most of the areas.

You’re missing the point. The point is that it is safe in Mexico. Yes. There are some places where of course your wouldn’t want to go, but a lot of places are extraordinarily safe. I grew up on the mean streets of Palo Alto and I feel as secure if not moreso in Los Barriles or Todos Santos. The stats back up the sentiment.

Hey , Baltimore resident here; love my town. Don’t need the shade! Leave us out of this mkay.

It doesn’t feel big because it’s kind of separated into neighborhoods. This would be my choice.

Just checked out some houses for sale online, and prices there are NOT CHEAP! Looks like a cool, small city though.

Sorry if I’m saying something obvious but you know that $ is also the symbol for pesos, so you may be looking at prices listed in pesos and think they’re in dollars. For international listings it probably says $ MXN.

Nicer cities and neighborhoods in Mexico are more expensive, but I don’t think it would seem too bad after living in the DC area.

A small village in Mexico with a private school? Does that even exist?
