And that’s why many parents have turned it down. It doesn’t work for Eastern so why is it being foisted on TPMS? |
If you've been in a classroom lately, you'd know that block scheduling is terrible especially in this day and age. Kids cannot focus for more than 30 minutes, those extra 15 feel like pulling teeth sometimes...90 minutes? Give me a break. |
Disagree. My non magnet kid at TPMS is well served by the block schedule. Teachers are really good about giving brain breaks and the longer class periods allow them to go into more depth or assign group projects. With shorter classes, you lose so much time in transition (settling in, packing up). |
I much prefer block days a a parent. |
|
This is disheartening. We had a child attend when the magnet was still mysteriously selective (pre-pandemic) and it was a great program with fantastic teachers, some of whom have left.
This coupled with the new way they do admits via lottery feels like they're slowly changing this into another Argyle/Loiderman thing with CompSci as the focus. |
How, as a parent, does it affect you? You're not the one going to school, sitting in 90 minute classes. Students HATE block scheduling. |
Students LOVE block scheduling! |
My TPMS kid loved it. The switch to a standard schedule in HS was rough. |
It’s really sad. I wish the current principal knew this. Maybe alumni should reach out too |
Maybe Takoma Park parents should wake up and talk to the BOE and the county council. Your student doesn't have to be in the magnet program to benefit from going to school with a high achieving cohort. |
My Blaur kid lived the block. Made HW manageable |
Honestly this sounds like the move |
| What rationale has the school presented for wanting to make this change? |
Teachers claim it creates more work for them. It’s been in place successfully since the early 2000s. |
Teacher here. Wrong on every level. All we hear are constant complaints about block scheduling from students. No complaints when I worked at a standard 7 day period, 43 minute class school. |
