TPMS magnet changes

Anonymous
I heard that kids were told today that the bell schedule is changing and next year if you are in the magnet you only get one elective. Previously they’ve had two.

Administration hasn’t told parents yet.

The ability to take both a foreign language and orchestra is important to many magnet families.

Are current magnet families speaking out about this?

My 6th grader is not happy about the changes. Are they final?

My oldest was at TPMS when they tried to do it previously. At that time, the push for the change was coming
from some of the teachers.

The PTA opposed the change and coordinated with the principal at the time (Ms. Johnson) to survey the students. I think teachers and parents were probably surveyed as well, but I don’t really remember that part. After all the results were in, Ms. Johnson decided to keep the block schedule with the extra elective.

I really think it all depends on the principal. If the principal wants the change, there’s probably nothing you can do. If the pressure is coming from the teachers again AND is someone who is wiling to work with parents for the good of the kids, you MIGHT be able to counter the change if you get organized and move quickly.

Good luck! I know the kids really benefit from the extra elective.

I believe it’s the teachers. It’s BS.

This is the way it is at the Eastern magnet and kids that want to do orchestra or band have an after school option because there isn’t enough elective space in the day.

Yes eastern only allows one elective but they only offer band after school, not orchestra.

The beloved band teacher at TPMS will surely not go for that. Plus there are multiple band and orchestra classes.

What does the new bell schedule look like?

So, one thing that I think was fairly sneaky was that the TPMS kids were surveyed before they checked in at home. So they might not have realized that they would need to give up an elective (technology vs. language vs. orchestra) before being pushed to complete the survey.

Yes...itnis ridiculous / sneaky that they surveyed the students before asking the parents. Please join the zoom call today to provide feedback. My kid also does not want to give up an elective because of the change. Parents, please push back against this change.

Why be so selfish? I mean, this makes the teachers happy, so why not throw them a bone? Sure, your kid can't take 12345 electives now. So what?

The extra elective was part of the calculus when current families decided to attend. Plus, the ability to take a band/orchestra class during school is good for kids’ mental and emotional health.

That’s how most schools are. Do thing privately like the rest of us.

They should make the mind-numbing CS class an elective, so the academically advanced kids kids can take language and music classes, and do CS using one of the many free curricula at home.

If your kid is not in the TPMS magnet, you don't know why this is a big deal.

We'll take it up with the administration.
