Recommend a few custom home builders (McLean)

Check out classic cottages. We didn’t build with them, but we bought one of their homes and have been very happy.

We want to build with them but just need a lot. They suggested starting at about 1.2 - 1.4 mn starting price for a build not including site work or the lot for a 5000 sq ft approx as base price.

One gets what one pays for, at least in the sense that one will not get more than one paid for.

I’d suggest you drive by and closely examine one of the Focal Point (or whomever else) builds in the early stages — well before the siding or whatever is installed. Look closely at the parts which are visible then (before the drywall and exterior facade get installed), but which cannot be seen after those bits are installed.

We will never buy a Focal Point house.

We need to unite to hold them accountable to stick to approved site plans, follow noise ordinances mandating hours for outdoor construction, be respectful during construction hours, pick up their trash, and use proper equipment to avoid generating dust/debris in neighboring yards. The developers don't have a vested interest in this and your neighbors are going to hold you accountable, so please ensure the company you pick does it the right way.

If the build with an issue is on your block, then call the local government to seek enforcement of their ordinances. At least the Northern VA localities have ordinances about noise levels, about when construction can start, and so on. The Town/city/county likely will not know about the issues unless someone on the street tells them directly.

Yes, very nice couple and easy to work with. You can tour their house to get a sense of their style and design; however, felt their base pricing at $350 square ft was too high. Not including any site costs.

Who is the best builder if I want a more traditional style house with Colonial or Georgian, or Greek revival style architecture?

Agree with others that said drive around - you'll see plenty of builder signs in the area. I love the look of Classic Cottages and HATE Focal Point - as a PP said, cheap cheap cheap construction and within a year the house is dated.

How does focal point become dated in a year when most of the houses they build look similar to other spec houses in Mclean?

I assume 5000 sq ft is above grade, does the cost of $1.2-1.4M include finished basement?

Classic Cottages is a spec builder slightly better than Toole Brothers. OP wants a good house.

Whitestone - Herb Amman. He builds father of the bride movie houses.

Very useful information actually. No matter who you use, always have a wall check inspection, a pre drywall inspection, and a blue inspection.
