Depends on the location. But a lot of places where there is not an very competitive environment for music are cutting back on music education and orchestra usually gets cut first. Of course, that is not the case in the DMV. |
| I am Asian. I know many asian families enroll their kids at age 5 or earlier for piano, and then violin. I think I am the odd one. My kids are 5 and 9 with no music background that means they can't read music sheets. I wonder if it is too late for them to learn now just for fun, possibly joining band or orchestra if they decide to go further one day. I don't want to spend too much money in private 1:1, but I doubt if group lessons work or not for real. 5 year old wants to learn piano, and 9 year old is interested in drum or guitar for rock. |
| Indians like piano too |
Asians can’t move on, huh? At our middle school violins are the preferred instrument for the Asian kids. I’ve also noticed the best style of dance Asians do is hip hop. They excel at hip hop. |
Last I looked, they were Asian too |
It used to be considered part of being a well educated MC person to know how to read music, for white Americans, but that seems to be an old fashioned idea nowadays. My kids took piano lessons in order to learn to read music. One stuck with piano, one didn't. They both play other instruments now, also. |
| When I grew up ( a tiny Asian country) we only heard of piano and recorder. Since I heard kids could learn violin starting 4th grade in public school, I just signed them up for violin like most others do. I didn’t let kids signup band starting 5th since adding another music instrument means more time for practicing. I guess, it’s much more easier to find violin teachers/classes than band music instrument teachers/classes. |

| What is suzuki? |
I was in a marching band. Trumpet, French horn. We competed in the summer with other bands. So fun. |

You can find cheap online instructors. Focus on percussion vs just kit alone. Not too late at all. Percussion for orchestra generally starts in middle school. |
Our marching band is lame and does not compete. |
Real MC cannot afford lessons. |
Sure you can, it you prioritize it. If you don't, then you can't. |
