What do people mean when they say “I’m not political” or “I’m not into politics”

I know someone who has never voted in an election before and they think it’s because voting doesn’t change anything about the world so why bother

Honestly this sounds pretty good to me. I think I may try this for a few years. Caring and wanting to affect change is exhausting, especially in this current climate.

For most upper middle class suburbanites life has gone mostly unchanged from president to president. Maybe some slight economic up and down but for most people life goes on.

Majority of these responses are from people who have never had someone say "I'm not into politics" to them.

So they are making wild and mostly untrue statements.

My 22 yr old DD who is a new teacher in NoVa -- first time voter because 2020 she was away in college having a stressful start due to Covid restrictions.

She was never one to really join in any conversations about political issues...too divisive she has said and that's true. She wasn't going to vote this election and repeatedly said she is "not into politics". I had to really push hard for her to vote - she disliked both options and is in the camp of it's the lesser of two evils.

I have no idea who she voted for or perhaps she voted third party, or maybe left it blank and voted down ballot only.

What I do know is that her experience as a new teacher has been eye opening and she completely understands how the current education system is a mess and must be a priority...that being said, she has stated "equity is BS" -- meaning equity via social engineering does not work.

I’m a teacher and I didn’t want to vote against the public schools so I voted for Harris, but the “equity” that’s occurring in schools is indeed BS.

I think a lot of people don't like to talk about politics. They have political beliefs in the south but have cognitive dissonance about politics. They have their beliefs but they are more like religious faith and they don't actually think much about how it actually could impact their lives.

But hey like they say it's all fun and games until someone loses an eye.

It means they’ve identified you as a likely bat-sh!t crazy liberal, and they’re simply defusing the situation and demurring to you so you don’t lose your mind and start something that might force them to stomp the dogsh!t outta you… or shoot you in self defense.


Be happy they say they’re not into politics. It will keep your teeth in your head.
