What do people mean when they say “I’m not political” or “I’m not into politics”

They mean they have lives other than Politics and you are exhausting to be around because you want to turn every conversation into a Political one.

Honestly, most of them actually have to work a real job and raise a family and don't have time to sit around and stress about it like office drones who can keep tabs on NYT and WaPo all day. And frankly, it's healthier. I can't say my life is any better since I got interested in politics.

I often tell people that I'm not into politics because it shuts them up before they tell me their polical opinions.

Christ these “explanations” are so condescending.

Talking about politics is not fun for some people. No one listens to each other and lately it’s just a way to get scolded and shamed or even if you agree with people, most people just like to hear themselves talk or listen to you agree with them more. Genuine curiosity and listening are in short supply.

Many people do not follow the ins and outs of the “sport” of politics like people in DC do. It doesn’t mean we are dumb or uneducated or don’t care.

It’s a polite way for them to let you know they don’t want to talk to you about the subject so buy a clue and shut up and move on.

I care plenty, but I will not engage with anyone on politics. I don't care if you share my views or not. It's not a topic I enjoy for conversation. So I might say that to not engage.

Plus 100. Your life doesn’t revolve around who is in office, even if policies impact you. You make it work no matter which politician is in office.
