what 11th grader has an LOR lined up in October? |
If it is STA or Sidwell likely to get in. |
what kind of social scene is he looking for? |
he's social, in a poker group, kind of a normie, not a drinker but I'm sure will in college, would like to avoid a super drinking/drug vibe. |
Agree 100%. May add Carleton and Haverford too |
This. ED where the teacher has connections (if kid also likes the school of course) |
Chicago ED1 and do video with dogs playing poker |
Rice might be tricky. |
In our private school, kids with SAT above 1560 and a 4.0 and some impactful ECS were the ones that got into Rice ED. |

It is too early to make this choice. The question you should be asking is about making a list. You make the list first, then choose the ED school among those on the list - the top choice. Determine the top choice next summer, not fall of junior year.
Junior year grades will be the most important - that could go either way. SAT will increase almost certainly, in at least one section. Retake in spring or next fall. ECs are half-baked, as junior year is usually more fruitful for ECs, e.g. better chance for debate awards, teen job next summer, etc. Also, being so early in junior year, it's unlikely you have already visited multiple options for ED. Since you can afford to do so, do not have your child apply ED to a school you have not visited. If your high school uses Naviance or Scoir or similar, check out the scattergrams. It is hard for others to judge your high school. For mid-size universities, I'd probably be looking beyond top 10, but if junior year goes very well, throw in few T20 reaches. Have a bunch of T20-50s and then some safeties all the way back to T80s+. |
