Humanities major, PPE kinda thing
Private school
3.8, dragged down by 9th grade
1520 SAT - but just a junior so will take again.
Debate kid
a lot of in-school involvement
weak outside school ECs, summer stuff (hoping for a better summer after junior year)
not super compelling story, but a good writer
very best LOR from known-to-top-colleges teacher
not an athlete

Open to small to medium sized schools, willing to do ED, full pay

what 11th grader has an LOR lined up in October?

he's social, in a poker group, kind of a normie, not a drinker but I'm sure will in college, would like to avoid a super drinking/drug vibe.

our school has a teacher like that. he can get any kid into Bowdoin it seems. I mean, he only writes 2 letters a year so that 's part of it

This. ED where the teacher has connections (if kid also likes the school of course)

Rice might be tricky.

In our private school, kids with SAT above 1560 and a 4.0 and some impactful ECS were the ones that got into Rice ED.

NP. Curious why you ask this.

It is too early to make this choice. The question you should be asking is about making a list. You make the list first, then choose the ED school among those on the list - the top choice. Determine the top choice next summer, not fall of junior year.

Junior year grades will be the most important - that could go either way. SAT will increase almost certainly, in at least one section. Retake in spring or next fall. ECs are half-baked, as junior year is usually more fruitful for ECs, e.g. better chance for debate awards, teen job next summer, etc.

Also, being so early in junior year, it's unlikely you have already visited multiple options for ED. Since you can afford to do so, do not have your child apply ED to a school you have not visited.

If your high school uses Naviance or Scoir or similar, check out the scattergrams. It is hard for others to judge your high school. For mid-size universities, I'd probably be looking beyond top 10, but if junior year goes very well, throw in few T20 reaches. Have a bunch of T20-50s and then some safeties all the way back to T80s+.
