Pitt merit aid for OOS

Disagree. Fantastic school - especially after the massive donation from Dietrich ($125 million to college of arts and sciences). If anything, DCUM underrates it as an easy early acceptance.

It hits the sweet spot for many students, re: size, urban with green space and D1 football (hard to find good football in a city school), amazing for pre-med/pre-health, psychology, philosophy (ranked globally), and English. Huge rare languages department. Many small classes - better student-teacher ratio than most publics. And lots of opportunities for internships in the city during the school year. And the students are happy, not depressed/bitter/overstressed from a hyper competitive peer group.

+1

This is the lowest ranked school among all the colleges we visited. But we thought it had by far the happiest students of all. So many students turned up on a Saturday morning and they were so enthusiastic. They are doing something right and it basically ticked all our boxes.

Just across the street, when we asked the CMU tour guide, why he chose CMU, he told us "because I could not get into a better college". But he is seemed quite fine and not depressed in any way. No dig on CMU.

Happy that child was admitted and just learned that they offered $80k merit aid over 4 years.

DS from HS class of 23 applied for CS. Out of 8 acceptances, Pitt was only 1 of 2 (the other being WM in state) that did NOT offer merit. Merit offers received from UMD, Ohio St., UMN, CWRU, Lehigh and BU.

Class of 24 DD received $25 per year. 4.0/1550. School of engineering.

Found an old webpage from before the pandemic. Suggests SATs should be 1450. Our DC was 1430, exactly at the score line to be NM Commended.

My DS got the same package with a 1400. He got much more money other places including private schools and UMD.

My kid got 10k/year to Dietrich TO. I don't think test scores matter that much if an applicant is strong overall.

PP. It might be an an early/late distinction. My kid applied Nov. 30 (to meet Dec. 1 Honors College deadline). But I still think SATs might factor in unless you go TO.

1430/well above 4.0 somewhere - top 10% of class -2 officer positions - lots of ECs including 3 with depth - admitted to Honors College & pre-admit to GSPIA master's. Only $5K/yr.

DC going to Michigan, no merit, for $20K less/yr. I am an alum of both. All is well.

Does Pitt send email re merit aid, or does kid just have to keep checking portal? Finally got personalized welcome video 10 days after acceptance!

We just found out that DS got 10K/yr over four years. He's a strong student but not blowing the roof off. He likes the idea of going to Pitt and it's good to hear that the students are happy. That's our family's goal-- good school, happy DS.

Anonymous wrote:Pitt used to be known for having fairly generous merit aid. About 4 or 5 years ago, they moved away from that and started funneling money toward need based aid instead. I wouldn’t count on merit unless your kid applies early and is at the top of the applicant pool, and even then awards have been few and for smaller amounts.

My kid goes to Pitt. Had scores comfortably above the 75% range and didn’t get anything. While I’d have liked to get something, I’m quite sure the money is better spent on people who can’t afford the full cost.

What do they say is the remaining annual cost you need to cover? Is that less than UVA in state ?

NP. It's about the same as UVA. OOS Pitt is close to $60,000/year. UVA in state is about $40,000.

It can be a fantastic option for DC students who don't have a state school. they often get merit plus $10k/year off with DC tag.

Do you have to keep checking the portal for admissions decisions and merit aid or do they send an email?

Pretty sure email was several days behind portal for my kid last year, so check the portal!

Why my daughter got accepted to Pitt and went to Delaware. The aid at Pitt for OOS is bad
Anonymous
It’s a state school in a state that is struggling to keep state schools afloat. Pitt will not be able to compete with private schools for merit.

How is Delaware's OOS aid?
