At the time the CHDS building was built, the commissioners for DC had their racist fun by naming schools after notorious segregationists. They named Wilson high school after a president who introduced and enforced segregation throughout the federal government--- and whose government razed the integrated Fort Reno neighborhood on land that now includes the since renamed high school. On the Hill, an elementary school was named after John Tyler, a failed president who later, and unbelievably, joined the Confederacy. That school has been renamed, reversing the cynicism of having Black children attend a school named for someone solely because of his racist background. And of course, many Northern Virginia schools have been renamed, in removing their Jim Crow era names.
I'm a parent of a CHDS grad, and I'm confident that if the current parents bring this issue to the truly terrific longtime HOS and the board, he'll work to get it done. It's a great school with a long history of equality in education. |
Our school isn't named after a person. You can't erase history. And frankly, it's disgusting to make white children feel guilty what happened to black people 50 years ago. |
Why should changing the name of a school (or in this case, removing an old name off a school building) make the white students feel guilty? It’s ok to acknowledge that those specific people are not who should be honored in 2024 without making children feel guilty. |
It’s all ridiculous and a waste of time. Changing school names or tearing down monuments accomplishes nothing except satisfying the small number of people who care about this nonsense. There’s a MLK Boulevard in every city. No one’s mind has been changed and no one’s life has been improved. No wonder more blacks are planning to vote Republican. They can see the lack of meaning behind stuff like this. |
An old name on a building isn't "honoring someone." But enjoy your pretend problems, I guess. |
| this is a solution in search of a problem |
+1 Her race baiting is sickening, but fortunately she will lose most or all of the battleground states so we will never hear from her again. |
| OP- Not specific to what you raised--but I'd love to hear about your experience at Capitol Hill Day School generally. I started a thread a few months back but did get many responses. We're applying for PK next year. |
| OP must have a great life if this is her biggest worry..... |
| Life was very different 100 and 200 years ago. Get over it. Instead of trying to hold those long dead people to our social standards focus on how far our country has come. We live in a very privileged and cushy world now compared to what life was like back then. Social norms were very different. If you lived back then who's to say you wouldn't do the things you are horrified of now. |
