Are they actually saying they are poor or that they just can't afford a Starbucks coffee?
The former is an income problem, the latter is about personal priorities.
I can't afford a Starbucks coffee either but that's because, to me, it's not worth the cost.

This was my first thought. Technically I can afford Starbucks but never buy it since I think it’s overpriced. My house is worth well over 1M. If this annoys you, try saying “yes, it’s overpriced coffee, we all have things we like to spend our money on”. And change the topic.

Generally, I don't visit Starbucks. If I plan to work there, then I don't grumble about the $5 coffee and consider it "rent."

I might ask this relative why they say things like that and see what they say. They seem to have been stressed when they bought their first house and now they have bought a third house and the stress and comments are similar.

Is your question, "Should they stop complaining about not being able to "afford" Starbucks given they own three homes and earn over $300K and will have free healthcare in retirement?"

I'd say yes. I don't really like to listen to people complain every time we speak.
