Toothpaste Millionaire is a great one! |
Thank you for this thread! Always looking to expand my son's reading list and there are some great suggestions here. |
Books by Jacqueline Woodson. She’s fabulous. |
I always enjoyed reading "The Snowy Day" by Keats to my kids. It captures a young kid's fascination with snow. I think young kids, maybe 6yo or 7yo would read it on their own.

There Was a Party for Langston Your Name is a Song Ben’s Trumpet Jazz Baby (under around 5 probably although I love reading it ) Henry’s Freedom Box Freedom in Congo Square March trilogy by John Lewis Parker Looks Up Whistle for Willie Sulwe Max and the Tag Along Moon Dancing in the Wings Crown |
Some great ones here that my son in particularly really loved, like the Tristan strong series.
I’d also recommend the dan gutman series about a kid who time travels through baseball cards. I don’t know the kid’s race but many of the baseball stats he visits are Blak or POC— Jackie and Me; Satch and Me; Roberto and Me; Willie and Me. There’s also the American Girl doll novels about Melody (1960s), Cecile (New Orleans early 19th century); and Addy. |
I have read these but saw a profile in my college alumni magazine — Jaden Toussant the Greatest (it’s a series, I think for ES readers). |
