I looked up “Tiny Stitches” thinking it was maybe about a seamstress…nope! Female surgical tech who pioneered lifesaving technique for babies.

There are actually a lot of sci-fi books - try Amari and the Night Brothers.

Novels my 10 year old son has loved include:

Bud, not Buddy by Christopher Paul Curtis
Saint Louis Armstrong Beach (his absolute favorite) by Brenda Woods
The Watsons go to Birmingham is on husband shelf to read (Christopher Paul Curtis)


He also has tons of the Ellray Jake's books on his shelf.

The Rick Riordan Presents imprint is a good starting point for finding books in this genre by a wider variety of writers.
