It seems like it is more challenging for my above grade level 2nd grader, which I think is great. And they're loving the stories as well. There will be an adjustment period, but I'm willing to give it this year to see how it goes. I wish my older kid had this curriculum as well!

I'm the PP -- and I will add that I have seen some declines in grades for my above average reader in specific areas, but I think this is the opportunity to see where our kids really are with a much better curriculum at an earlier age.

We've only gotten one grade posted, which was lower than expected, but I haven't seen what it was yet. I do like the homework, I've seen, which is more basic grammar (parts of speech, subject-predicate for third grade) and spelling.

My kid brought home a spelling test today. An actual spelling test. Hurrah!! I’m thrilled they’re finally getting explicit focus on this

I'm a teacher who is not impressed with the spelling. I've been teaching 20 years and it's never been a best practice to give all students the same 15 spelling words. I have always differentiated the spelling lists with a focus on patterns that specific students need to master.

Ok, but what is your problem with the Spelling? If the list need to be differentiated, that would still be a teacher function based on knowing that certain student either haven’t mastered earlier content so need to work on that first OR that certain students have master both earlier and current content and thus need a challenge.

Well, my kids went through MCPS and never had spelling. What an improvement to have any spelling.

We found spelling tests were helpful. Your way is why kids cannot spell.

It should be obvious that direct instruction in spelling and having regular in-class spelling tests is wildly better than no direct instruction in spelling and no regular tests in spelling.

Same principle applies to Phonics in K and lower elementary. Same also applies to grammar.

+100. Its amazing to me that some schools in MCPS apparently haven’t engaging in any Word Study through the whole of ES.

The take home 2nd grade handout wants the parent to discuss early Asian civilizations and Buddhism and Hinduism. ?? Sure, after I spend 45 minutes reviewing the spelling list and doing a 2 sided Eureka math worksheet every night.

Sorry if you’re not able to be an engaged parent. I’m thrilled to see my kid has actual homework and is doing actual fundamental study of things. I’ve been worried about her spelling for years and was told not to worry about it. So so grateful to have to be an explicit focus now.

And my kid is thrilled to learn cursive, too.

I am an engaged parent but after a full day of school it is too much homework.

Then skip it. There will be no consequence.

Haha ok except they are tested on all of these things. Spelling, math, AND ALL THE "SUGGESTED" material from Amplify!!!!! I found that out a few days ago with a poor grade.
