Shingles, ugh! What to use topically?

Shingles can be a side effect from any vaccine. It can be a side effect of COVID.

But let’s be realistic, a 53 year old who isn’t aware of the Shingrix being available to them for 3 years hasn’t had a COVID vax since their first 2 shots in the pandemic.

Well, that's a question for OP. Did you get the new covid booster, OP?

No. I had the first two shots in the pandemic. I have never had Covid, to my knowledge-have never tested positive.

In defense of not realizing I was eligible for the shingles shot-the last few years I was consumed with my ailing parent/s health (it was a difficult decline and death of one and decline of the other), and wasn't prioritizing mine. I'm certain the built-up stress from all that contributed to me getting shingles.

I called it.

Weird PP was a anti-vaxer blaming COVID vax.

Proof?

This article reports case studies of shingles occurring post-covid vaccine. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC9209775/
Given that people are getting the covid booster right now, it is a rare, but possible, factor to consider for new cases this month. The poster at 9/23 23:57 said they got shingles following a covid vaccine.

Right. Any vaccine can trigger shingles. Most infections. Just not a meaningful contribution, anti-vaxer.

Obviously shingles can happen after an infection challenges your immune system. Shingles after the vax is likely a coincidence, maybe another infection or stress going on at the same time.

OP here, I definitely don't want the thread to get locked up over vaccine stuff

I've been hosing myself down every few hours with lidocaine spray and I'm surviving the day so far! And talking to a few co-workers this morning, they both mentioned acquaintances who had it under 50, so I guess it's not entirely uncommon.

Glad you’re getting some relief, pp. Just a heads-up on your contagiousness if you weren’t aware already: if someone has not had chickenpox or the chicken pox vaccine, they could catch chickenpox from you.

When I was a child, I caught chickenpox from someone, as was common in those vaccine-less days. As a teen, I then got a very bad case of shingles, bad enough that pictures were taken of it at a military hospital. I had a rash on my hand and fingers, chest, back and leg. It was painful and then terribly itchy. I have some pockmarks from it but, thankfully, not on my face. I thought I was done but then heard of people who got Shingles twice or even thrice, so I got the Shingrix vax this year. I had a strong reaction to the first shot but not the second.

I’m 42 and have been dealing with recurring shingles for two years. Just got my first Shingrix vaccine which helped but didn’t stop this most recent one.

Topical acyclovir and gauze is the only way I have been able to cope with the pain and itching. My initial outbreak was extremely severe with excruciating nerve pain. Now it’s just annoying. I did have to advocate for myself with insurance to get it covered. HTH

It is very difficult to determine the exact cause of shingles. Mine was triggered by septicemia but my ID recommended that I wait for the wounds to close before getting the Covid booster thanks to this study. I did have it once during an earlier outbreak and it didn’t seem to affect the shingles at all in my case.

Why didn't you get the vaccine?

These are 2 that absolutely are proven effective at disease prevention.

Op here-I've done the Cologuard, but was not offered the Shingrex-although it seems the age has been lowered to 50 for that.

I guess I got it from stress-a parent passed away earlier this year, and work's been a handful also. I guess it all accumulated and lowered my immunity.

Cologuard is not the same as a full colonoscopy!
