Keep thinking WWIII will happen, I want the kids to go to local college.

You are having anxiety that’s all

This is an excellent point. Somewhere in the pastoral midwest or Canada would probably be best?

Canada is a mess right now. It's not the easy going, polite, open minded Canada we knew of and perhaps visited growing up and the best colleges there have been some of the worst when it comes to protests that are NOT peaceful.

Well cr&p. When the Canadians aren’t even nice anymore the world is totally f@:ked.

NP, I disagree that Op is having an anxiety attack. There’s always the possibility of nuclear or terrorist attacks. Some days more so than others. It makes sense to have some contingency plans.

In the past year my college kid experienced flooding, earthquakes, wildfires, riot police on campus, and dangerous heatwaves. COVID was not long ago. A contingency plan sounds reasonable.

OP unless there is a nuclear first strike against America WWIII would unlikely touch the continental US.

If a nuclear first strike occurs you would not want them near the DMV.

So take a deep breath, take a few minutes to logical explore the possibilities and you anxiety will subside.

This.

If a nuclear war happens, then DC will be ground zero, so farther away is safer. If not nuclear, then the lower 48 states or most of Canada will be fine.

My daughter chose to go to MA. We have some relatives there (my dad’s cousins, to be exact) who I trust to take in my child in case of emergency. One has already been there for her during an ER visit in just her second week of school. I also have some internet mom board friends who have offered help if needed AND people in the small town where my daughter’s college is have also offered to help her out (I reached out for some dorm items and literally got offers of homemade meals and places for my kiddo to stay for holidays!)

I would obviously fight like hell to get to her should something happen, but I also take comfort in knowing she will have people to turn to and they will protect her when I can’t.

Yes! Though I hadn't considered it until this thread. Thanks, OP.

No. Absurd. You’re living in some crazy Twitter/X world. Get off social media. It’s poison.

Agree. Redirect that anxiety to the prospect of civil war and send your kids abroad for uni.

Ha! Civil War? You think Americans are going to fight each other? Stop going to work? Paying their mortgages? Paying their bills? Lose everything? No way. You’ve watched too many dystopian movies. People aren’t going to sacrifice everything to go fight a civil war over ideology.

The only threat I worry about is the one to her reproductive rights. We’ve crossed states off the list for that reason.

OP, out of curiosity, are you the mom to twins?

Here is the thing about anxiety: as long as it’s there, it will ALWAYS have a new place to land. You will never be able to be careful enough, vigilant enough, prepared enough. Unless you recognize anxiety for what it is and treat it proactively, it will always be right there, hissing in your ear about the next terrible thing, and the next one after that. It will steal all your joy, and it will wedge itself into and damage the very relationships that are most important to you. And all the while it will insist it’s looking out for you, and for them.

But it can be treated, and when it is, there will be room for so much more.
