UVA out of state

My DC said there's still a question about legacy (do you have any relation to the school). is it true they don't look at legacy anymore?

SAT - would you submit or go Test Optional.

Agree. UVA's most recent CDS shows 50% of enrollees submitting SAT scores and 16% (possibly with some overlap) submitting ACT scores. That's fairly high for a TO school, suggesting that it's probably beneficial to submit if you're in range. And the 25/75 range in the 2023-24 CDS is 1410/1510, so your DC definitely is there.

There is, indeed, this question. No one knows its weight.

This applies to underrepresented minorities and ties back to the Grounds Tours that were all about slaves having built the campus per the recently put on hold student guides. This question came about after the Supreme Court case and is an opportunity to share personal / racial info. I know this all sounds like a stretch but I’ve done an enormous amount of research on this. Legacy is a no go at UVa. That is indisputable. You may dispute my rationale on the additional short essay question - although I’ve done my homework on this - but there is no disputing that UVA does not take legacy into account.
This is not correct. My current 1st yr has three OOS friends, all legacy, all white. OP, just like any other school, don't fall in love, have your kid apply and see what happens. Good luck.

Legacy was a thing until 2025.

Yep, sorry OP. Your kid is gonna have to get in on their own merit, which seems unlikely in your case. Best to stick with your own state school, which for sure is inferior.

Such a beautiful example of the UVA mentality.

That PP never said they were from UVA or had a kid there. Stop projecting your own bigotry

The essay is about the student's connection to UVA!

Fakse. There is no connection. If you knew what you were talking about you would kniw those grounds tours run by a woke student group were halted after endless complaintd by UVA on Aug 31 of this year

W&M is onky 25% Greek. It has a much better reputation. It ranks 53 on USNR; L&C ranks 93

Honestly the acceptance rate for OOS is so low. Prob even lower this year. I wouldn’t even apply.

Do you need another drink? Y’know, just to let that mean streak really fly?

Our OOS kid chose UVa over Berkeley (our state flagship) because it was the right choice for him. He really enjoyed the kind people in Virginia. Clearly, he never met you.

+1. 12 percent for OSS?

As of this year, legacies of any kind (OOS and in state) at public universities in Virginia may no longer be considered according to new legislation as of 7/1/24. It is outlawed essentially.

Then why do they have an essay asking about it?

I don't know, I am not in charge of the applications. But there literally is a LAW now against it. I am trying to explain it in as simple terms as possible. The law ALSO applies to donors (not just legacies). https://legacylis.virginia.gov/cgi-bin/legp604.exe?241+sum+HB48

HB 48, SB 46, took effect 7/1/24

In summary: Prohibits any public institution of higher education from providing any manner of preferential treatment in the admissions decision to any student applicant on the basis of such student's legacy status, defined in the bill, or such student's familial relationship to any donor to such institution.

I’m an alumni and UVA Alumni Association offers services where your child can meet with an advisor to review your child’s academic profile and ask questions about college planning/application process. The advisor told us regarding that essay question that they want to know about the student’s connection to UVA including whether your parents are alumni since they don’t get that information anymore elsewhere.
