Really? My kid took it at 14... it depends on how bright and math oriented a child is. |
| OP, have you had a teacher conference? If not, I would ask for this asap. |
Ok, that's super nice for your kid but it's not an issue of being "bright." It's an issue of MCPS accelerating half of the current 10th graders onto this path and then just shrugging when they hit a wall. Yes, it would be good if the kids who are not "math oriented" had the option to take this class in 11th instead of 10th, but that would have meant basically being in remedial math up until now. The die was cast in 4th grade when MCPS re-named remedial "on level" and took basically everyone else into compacted. |
| At a non-magnet program, students don't get it either. Not talking about the handful who get it, come in with a tutor etc... |
| OP is your kid a 10th grader? |
| Students are lined up for help at school if they can't afford or can't get a tutor. Unacceptable. |
Crawl back into your hole, racist. My 9th grader is in Honors Precalc at BCC. The school and the class are diverse. |
Its more than half at our school. With parents begging to put kids not selected for compact math in it even when not recommended. On top of that, these kids missed a year of math in middle school. Real recipe for success! There is no reason for most kids to be taking Calculus in 11th grade. |
After the first couple of exams. I'm sorry -- her schedule worked out. |
How is this possible? Does Westland bus kids for algebra 2 to BCC? |
More than half of the parents at our school are taking precalc at age 14? That's 8th or 9th grade. Those who start compacted in 4th and keep on the track don't take precalc until 10th, when they will be 15 or 16. |
Sorry, that should read that more than half are taking precalc at age 14 at YOUR school. |

Find out what the online textbook is an either ask for a hard copy or buy the hardcopy yourself.
This made a world of difference to my son. By having the hard copy we bought he could make notes in the book, look at the worked examples and flip back and forth between pages. The teacher didn't always follow page by page through each chapter but my son could figure out what she was skipping and where she was adding. The other thing is my son figured out there are still covid videos of lessons from his precalculus book. He started previewing some of the lessons so when he went to class he already had an idea of how to solve problems and what direction the lesson was going. |
Of course they have the option of taking it in 11th or 12th. There are also other math optios as well for kids who aren't able to take it. |
I have no idea what the rich schools do but other schools either offered it Algebra 2 in house or bussed the kids. |
