| Explain it to me like I’m a 5 year old. How did my kid get straight As in Alg 2 last year and has failed every graded assignment (exit tickets and quizzes) in Honors Pre Calc so far? And yes, starting tutoring this week. |
|
Your kid discovered girls.
What precalculus topics is the kid failing at? |
I don’t think it’s girls. Looks like the first topic on the syllabus is Piecewise Defined Functions/Composition of Functions/Limits |

Sorry, OP. I just laughed out loud because we are in the same boat and I promise it's not because my child has discovered girls (or boys) over the last year.
Honors Pre-Calculus is known to be a weeder class, but also some schools are not doing a great job teaching it. My child reports long lectures with very little practice. And of course no textbooks yet even though they were promised at BTSN. Also, my kid has been in tutoring since week one and it is barely helping. |
| Honestly. Pre calc is one of the hardest k-12 math classes especially if its not explained well and not all teachers teach it the same way. Even calculus is easier for some. My sister teaches math at a university and they care more about kids who did well in pre calc then calculus. Some speed through it, dont get a good base and then struggle in college math. |
|
They design it in such a way.
It is ridiculous. Wait till you hit their AP Calc course. Good grief, mcps math. Keep in mind mcps math is superior to private schools. Smh. |
| I would check out some online courses through coursera and Johns Hopkins for another perspective. Also this is where you really need a textbook. |
Thanks. The tutor asked me to send him examples of what they are doing in class and when I look at the modules on Canvas I see problem sets but not anything describing how to do this stuff. I guess it's in the digital textbook whose link is buried somewhere (which is awesome for my ADHD kid with exec functioning challenges). My kingdom for a hard copy text book!!! |
| I had to pull my kid last year. She'll be behind her peers when applying to college, but there was no path to success for her. |
At what point did you do this? I asked about switching to regular vs honors and there is not a section that can accommodate my kid (who is in CAP at Blair and the CAP classes all meet at the same time as the open Pre Calc sections). |
|
I do not know how we as a country can overcome this horrific state of math education and instruction.
OP this is known to be the hardest level. Have your kid go for after school help, hire a tutor or drop down. |
tutor, teacher help, and pray |
| deadline to drop is Sept 27 ?? |
Drop and replace with what if regular pre-calc isn't an option. Retake Alg 2? If we muddle through this year can he re-take regular pre calc in the summer and replace the grade? |
| It’s a harder class. Get a tutor. |
