Ran out of time on SAT during math, normally a strong skill. Will take ACT this weekend and will retake SAT next month.

Kid has been diagnosed with SN since age 2 and has had full neuropsych evaluation confirming high abilities but issues with timing.

504 at school with extended time but SAT accommodations weren’t approved. We submitted formal ed testing results, notes from doctors and psychologists, and still denied.

Did she have extra time on the PSAT?

Nope! Counselor thinks that’s why request was denied.

Take a look at Florida State as well. They have some strong humanities departments, and will probably have a similar scholarship program to Alabama’s. The Honors College is a good option, too.

I took a similar NMF scholarship to a similar giant school that does not have academic cachet but does very well in bowl games and even though I got great grades and went on to go to a top law school/white shoe firm, I've probably spent a quarter of every interview of my life talking about college football with the old white guy on the other side of the desk. They eat it up.

This is basically what my nephew with a similar profile did, and ten years out, it appears to have been the correct strategy.

Does Fordham still offer NMSF?

Thank you both for sharing! We are also looking at USF, UT Dallas and U of Tulsa as schools that offer extremely generous NMF packages. Arizona is off the list - too hot!

Kid doesn’t want loans or to have us pay for school.

Exploring English and Digital Media (film, video) as major/minor. Their goal is to have a solid education without the pressure of a T20. I know most of these schools aren’t even T50 but respect their preference.

NMF have priority housing, so kids get the on-campus 4br 2ba apartments with private bedrooms, living room, and full kitchen. The Honors College only takes about 500 kids each year, so it’s small but active with courses in kids majors, not fluff stuff, and plenty of social opportunities.

Do they still give an automatic full ride to out of state students? It’s not clear from their website.

All Florida states used to give NMF full rides but changed it a couple years ago.

Yes and it’s very generous. Fordham has Rose Hill (Bronx) and Manhattan campuses.

UCF gives a different package to OOS than what they used to. It’s probably considered a full ride since most kids get a refund, but it really depends on the options a student picks. The last two years it’s been a flat $20,000 a year for 4 years, instate tuition for 30 credits a year, guaranteed on-campus priority housing and guaranteed admittance to the Honors College (if they apply to it). Excess money gets refunded to the student’s bank account. Tuition is $212/credit, so $6360 for 30 credits a year. On campus housing runs about $6-10k annually depending on the dorm selected. No meal plan is required, but they are available from $4-6k/year.
Each year they offer it to less OOS students. Last year they offered 30 OOS scholarships. Not sure how many they’re offering this year.

Florida as a state offers an instate NMF package that is the full cost of attendance (the number that is padded to include transportation costs, personal expenses, etc). That Benacquisto scholarship was offered for a couple years to OOS students, but that was stopped, and now each Florida public has their own OOS NMF package.
