Yes, of course. PP here - I only have experience at TPMS and Blair. I wonder if it's true that TPMS is the richest of the DCC middle schools - sure Takoma Park has a lot of very expensive houses but we also have a lot of low income apartments. Wonder how it all balances out. |
Where did I say that? Not being upper middle class does not mean you “have no money”. |
OMG, do you understand that there is an entire world between “upper middle class” and “dry cleaners and convenience store owners”? (Though the latter can be wealthy too) |
Not exactly the same, but TPMS has the lowest FARMS rate of the DCC middle schools, 34.8%. Next lowest is SSIMS at 41.5%. |
Knee jerk much? The “regular” description was to distinguish kids from magnet kids. |
The median HHI in MoCo is $118K. From a sociological perspective, UMC is generally considered to be between the 60th and 80th percentile. So, a family with two GS-15s, or a physician and a SAHP, or any number of other configurations that are common in Bethesda/Potomac, are absolutely UMC. |
Not in the context of another PP referring to white and UMC families |
That’s not a response to the point above |
Very happy at Northwood too. This is our first year. My only complaint is that my child has to catch a super early bus, but she's handling it very well. |
DP The middle class is hollowing out and MoCo is a great example of this trend. Lots of low income and high income people moving in and not a lot of people in the middle. 27% of households have an HHI over $200k. |
Thank you for posting this. Most of you would be surprised at how many AAPI kids in those magnets end up taking UMD scholarships because they are not wealthy. The ignorance is shocking. |
Could you say more about your other child’s Blair experience? |
You make it sound like only middle class people would settle for UMD, when actually a UMD scholarship is extremely attractive for most UMC families. Those that make twice the area median income are not middle class but are also not swimming in enough money to justify giving up a UMD scholarship to pay $80k per year for private. |
Very chaotic environment that was not good for her. Principal was totally unresponsive and delegated too much. Maybe a new principal will help change this. It certainly did for Northwood. |
This is actually spot on, trouble makers for the most part are kids that for some reason ( learning disability, distraction, instability or just lazy) have checked out of learning but still attend the school. Poor schools will have more of these because of increases in instabilities and lack of resources to combat some of the others but every school has some. Most professionals think Dropout% is a good indicator of a schools climate. You want graduation % and attendance rates north of 90%. FARMs south of 20%. There are simply not many schools in the DCC like that if any. The amount of knuckle heads is really the variable because the curriculum and facilities have more in common than they have differences. |
