DCC for non-magnet kid

Anonymous
Wheaton has very good STEM but poor English/writing instruction. My kid has not learned how to write. Did not even have a paper ever until the very end of junior year once AP English was over. Social Studies APs have not assigned papers.

Very happy at Northwood and the new building has not been the challenge we were anxious about.

Cannot say this about my other child’s Blair experience.

Could you say more about your other child’s Blair experience?

Very chaotic environment that was not good for her. Principal was totally unresponsive and delegated too much. Maybe a new principal will help change this. It certainly did for Northwood.

Nah, you're definitely trolling.
You're definitely not talking about Renay Johnson and Blair under her leadership.

This is particularly true of MCPS’s flagship magnet at Blair, where white kids are very much the minority.

Those minority kids (Asians specifically) largely come from the 30-40% Asian wealthy neighborhoods.

+1 This isn't NYC. The Asian American kids in MCPS magnets are not coming from the families of dry cleaners and convenience store owners. They are the children of scientists and other professionals and disproportionately live in wealthy neighborhoods. You don't have to believe my word - check out this racial heat map: https://www.censusdots.com/race/montgomery-county-md-demographics

Asian rich kids go to privates, asian middle class with double income probably both work in Feds go to these public. Restaurants and Dry Clean kids are actually wealthy Asians kids in mcps, amongst the Indians who come from families lived in gated communities and have a team of servants, and entrepreneurs from China by manipulating government fundings so now their families are hiding out in the U.S. Both don’t give a damn about pretend magnet schools.
I live in the DCC and know plenty of UMC white kids that are not in magnet programs.

I think it might be helpful for you to tune out DCUM posts about "poor cohorts". IME there's a really big difference between how people talk about schools on DCUM vs IRL.
This.

I'm not surprised there are opposing opinions. Blair can be chaotic because of it's size and that does not mean the principal was doing something wrong.

It's just just TPMS but TPMS is probably the richest of the DCC schools although SSI also pulls from some pretty well off areas.

Meant it's not JUST TPMS. All the DCC schools have a group of highly motivated and smart students across racial and SES groups.

Yes, of course. PP here - I only have experience at TPMS and Blair. I wonder if it's true that TPMS is the richest of the DCC middle schools - sure Takoma Park has a lot of very expensive houses but we also have a lot of low income apartments. Wonder how it all balances out.

They sent some of the poorest areas to (like flower Ave and long branch to a different school SSIMS

For the sake of clarity, those neighborhoods are zoned to Rolling Terrace because they are closer to that elementary school and proximity matters, particularly when an elementary school is also serving as a hub for social services.

Rolling Terrace articulates to SSIMS because it is a dual language immersion program, and that instruction can be continued at the middle school level at ssims.
