Mom won’t wear hearing aids - just a vent

Will wearing hearing aids lessen dementia risk?

Put her in a home. They usually have birds and cats she can talk to.

Not the OP: yes, it is supposed to lessen dementia risk or slow the progression.

My mother in law knows this yet she won't wear them bc she thinks they don't help (not sure if they really don't or if it's vanity). My husband returned them. She also won't take her dementia medication-she says it hurts her stomach. Hopefully there is something else they can try.

The Airpods Pro 2 can also double as hearing aids.

I was just going to chime in to OP that you're definitely not alone. BTDT with my parent. The Captel phone that types out the words was suggested by the doctor and it helped. Though it for made a lot of conversations about the Captel errors. But overall it was accurate enough.

But also, wow, that's amazing that earbuds now can act as hearing aids and testers. I'm an Android user, but this could push me over. Unless it's already on Android, too...off to google.

I have hearing aids but I dont wear them because I can hear the rest of the background white noise. Its very disturbing.

The Hearing Tracker site has a great forum where you can find help in getting the most out of your hearing aids. Whether it's getting them adjusted to get rid of the noise, or adjusting your expectations. Hearing aids that you don't wear don't do anything for you.

Great...can kill two birds. Make my teenager take his Airpods out of his ears so he can hear us, and give those Airpods to grandpa so he can hear us.

Now it’s worse because she can’t hear the person at all and she refuses to wear her hearing aids. She doesn’t know who I am when I call because she can’t hear me. She can’t hear me saying “I have to go now”.

I’m a single parent, no support at all. I don’t have time for this. I started hanging up after yelling that I had to go. Now I’ve stopped calling because she can’t hear me and hangs up because she doesn’t know who it is. I’m tired of calling back repeatedly.

Honestly I don’t miss the 1 hour calls where she talks nonstop about all of her medical problems.

There’s obviously more re why I don’t bother anymore but I think aging parents need to understand the impact of not hearing on their relationships and wear their hearing aids. If they don’t, be prepared for fewer phone calls and visits.

Just venting to complete strangers, not looking for solutions, have tried them all.

Does she read email? My brother got my mom to wear hearing aides when he told her the science backs cognitive decline when you can't hear.

Yesss. I'm so tired of calling my kids name repeatedly and her saying, "they aren't that loud!" every time I tell her to hand them over.

Told her she's missing out on life and conversations.
