That sounds like how a MIL criticizes.

Yeah, I guess. A really enthusiastic, cook MIL. Because I think it is neat! As long as it is what the parents intended.

That is what is known as a backhanded compliment. The criticism is implied, and if needed the person doing it can deny that it's criticism at all. But it nonetheless is a backhanded compliment.

I don't see it as criticism, though. Just like, if someone named their first child Catherine Jenny and their second chld Caroline Joan, OI might say "Oh, cool -- they will have the same initials!" That's not being critical, it's just commenting on something you noticed.

OF course it is backhanded. You mean it as criticism.

I don't get it. What is wrong with "Hannah Grace"?

New poster here...so what? There are about three dozen Hebrew names that mean either gift from God/consecrated to God/Oath of God/God's grace depending on what baby name you look at. It's a Hebrew name + an entirely etymologically different Latin name. I don't find anything strange about it.

What if they had a son named Eric and and planned on naming their new daughter Erica?

She is free to name HER children whatever she wishes. MYOB.

I must be dumb, I don't get it.

Isabelle and Elizabeth are derivations of each other... get it?

Isa/Eliza

Belle/Beth

Just like Charles is Carlos in Spanish, William is Guillaume in French, Mary is Maria in Spanish, Joanne is Johanna in German, etc...

I would have never known that...guess I'm a dummy. I could have made the same mistake.

I'm slow. What's wrong with Elizabeth an Isabelle? Is it because they sound similar?

They are the same name in different languages. An earlier example was of two brothers named Charles and Carlos or sisters named Maria and Mary.

"Cool! They will have the same initials" = "criticism" to you?

If so, you sould like the kind of person who reads criticism where none was intended. Sad, but if so, not other people's problem.

So here's my questin to you PP -- I'm not necessarily saying it IS a mistake to give your two children a name that means the same thing, just in two different olanguages. But say you think it is a mistake, but you just didn't realize they meant the same thing -- would you want a friend to point it out to you? Or would you rather they not say anything, and let you find out later after the second child has been born and named, etc?

Why not simply assume that they have researched the names themselves and have a personal reason for choosing the names. You aren't really going to tell another adult that you think the name they have chosen for their child is stupid or dumb or whatever, are you? However, this does remind me of a recent story on the news where a couple had named their child Hitler. I don't think for one minute they weren't aware of the connotations and the sad thing is they felt their rights to do this superceded the child's future. Elizabeth and Isabelle are just not that bad, they are beautiful names. How do you know they aren't family names. Anyway, MYOB.
