Fine Jewelry

Just go to TJ max and get something on sale for under $200

Nobody has money to be wasting on Tiffany and half that junk isn’t even real gold and silver

I wandered in a few stores today and I can’t bring myself to spend that much! I know Tiffany’s has a major markup for instance but didn’t expect the tiny gold bracelet I tried on to be over $5K without (no diamonds or anything of the sort). There’s a ring I’ve wanted for the last year that is $3K+.

I have the money, but I can’t bring myself to pay what is essentially a mortgage payment for these pieces.

How do folks have multiple designer pieces like this? I follow a woman on instagram who is local to DC I believe and younger than me (Thrift and Tell) and she has so many nice jewelry pieces in addition to a curated designer wardrobe. I know she gets a lot of her clothing second hand but jewelry just doesn’t have the same markdown.

I feel like I’m doing something wrong.

Do you have and wear a lot of fine jewelry? If so did you purchase it yourself or did a partner? Do you think it’s worth it?

LOL no you are not doing something wrong. Stop looking at social media.

For one jewelry is a terrible investment especially diamonds.

If you like something and have the money buy it.

Terrible investment.

Again buy what you like. I am a huge fan of Cartier, Harry Winston, Messika and H Stern. Or find a fine private Jeweler in NY not in DC area. Never ever buy fine jewelry at Neimans or Saks over priced.

When I buy jewelry I only buy it set in platinum. White gold rhodium plate not my style. My sister would only buy that.

Yes my husband buys me jewelry. LOL he likes to buy it more than I do. Because I think it truly is a waste of hard earned dollars.

OP jewelry is in the eye of the beholder.

Again it is not an investment.

The key is to wear as little jewelry as possible, but as classic and high-quality as possible. If you want variety, look into second-hand jewelry.

It also helps that I prefer the look of silver. Gold is $$$.

I can’t stand silver. It looks so cheap.

Lol. This is pretty stupid.

Or they get freebies.

I was talking to a scientist about climate change and she alerted me to the problem of mining and gold. I knew about blood diamonds but didn't realize gold was an issue. And apparently jade is even worse.

I also like real gold but would only buy it for a special occasion and prefer recycled gold or lab diamonds or vintage. RealReal for name brand stuff.

Sorry to be a buzz kill!

Says someone with no taste or character whatsoever. It “looks” exactly like platinum or white gold (except that no one sets diamonds, rubies, sapphires or emerald in silver) so it’s all in your head. But more to the point silver has style and always has had it. You just have to know the right brands and how to wear it. There is also no substitute for certain ethnic silver but you don’t have the style or taste to go there.

Sorry, again, silver is not fine jewelry. It’s just not. No matter how hard you insist.

I have a couple of pieces of fine jewelry (Cartier, VCA, Tiffany, Jennifer Meyer) that I've collected over the years. If I can't stop thinking about a particular piece and have the funds, I'd go for it. I usually end up wearing it more than my cheaper and fun jewelry - and yes, that includes silver jewelry from Tiffany - so the price per wear is lower. I've had the Cartier Love bracelet for more than ten years now and still wear it almost everyday. It's one of my best purchases.

The necklace I wear every day is fine jewelry, cost about $600 and it was a gift from dh. It's very simple gold and emerald. Tiffany's has a similar one for 5k. I would have been upset if dh bought the 5k one considering how similar they are. Tiffany's does mark up like crazy.

I have all my fine jewelry designed and made in South Africa and Zimbabwe. I travel to the region at least once a year to visit my parents and other family/friends.

H Stern is nice. This is the kind of jewelry I'm willing to drop money on every once in a while. Some vintage Tiffany is really special too.

A lot of the pieces at Saks are mass-produced flimsy junk.

I’ve also had the Love for about a decade. It’s such a great piece. I don’t care how much DCUM hates it!

I love Tiffany and Cartier, but I buy on eBay so I get it at 1/2 price. It's probably still over-priced, but I can afford 1/2 price so that's what I do. Make sure you can return it before you buy, then take it to a jeweler to make sure it's authentic.

I don't buy a lot, but I bought some favorite rings that I wear all the time. I inherited a $$$ Cartier necklace and some other jewelry that I would never wear to work.

I prefer platinum to silver because you don't have to polish it. Platinum just develops a nice patina as it ages with wear, and you don't see that patina on silver.
