My kid has had good and bad parent coaches, and good and bad non-parent coaches.
The only thing you really need to watch out for with parent coaches is when there is more than one parent "assistant coach". That never works out well for the rest of the players. |
OP here, thanks. We are near Loudoun but in Fairfax County so it looks like these are are two assigned choices. A neighbor also mentioned Herndon as a chance? Does anyone know about the coaches for these teams? CYA has the coaches listed already but the other two do not. (Assuming as the previous poster said that its the same coaches every time). |
Here's a link to the standings for all the teams last year. You can look up 7th grade boys to get an idea of teams for your son: https://season-microsites.ui.sportsengine.com/seasons/65248ffdd5d12a7eb523a1a6/standings?_gl=1*z49uxk*_ga*MTA3MTM2MTU4LjE3MjQ4NTEwMjI.*_ga_PQ25JN9PJ8*MTcyNDg1MTAyMi4xLjAuMTcyNDg1MTAyMi4wLjAuMA.. I wouldn't be too picky about coaches at this point. Just have your son try out for as many teams that he's eligible for and hopefully he'll get an offer or two. From there you can decide what team you want to join if your son gets an offer. You'll need to check with Hendon to see if your zip code qualifies for their team. Don't get too hung up on the coaches b/c no one here will know anything about them...I would choose any team in county over playing house if your son wants to play more competitive basketball. |
Baseball is the WORST for this. Five parent assistant coaches and their kids all play infield every game. |
agree-OP, you aren't in a position to be picky about the coach. Sorry. You should take him to the Herndon tryouts. Their team was really weak and they might be desperate for enough bodies to fill out a roster to use a zip code exception on anyone willing to play for them. in general, teams that had a bad season will have more open roster spots the next year. CYA lists two lowest tier teams for next year. You should take him to CYA too. Kids don't want to move down divisions so there should be some open spots there too. |
| going to be tough to switch from rec in 8th, get him some private training before tryouta |
Can you try out for CYA if you don’t live in Chantilly? Not OP. |
Yes. They have a bunch of assigned zip codes that include parts of Centreville and Herndon. Each team gets at least two zip code exceptions as well. Coaches are a real mixed bag but that's true of every large org. |
+1. Girls team the same. Can’t bump off anyone. They never change the point guards either |
For cya? |
I don’t know. We moved from MoCO with a young but talented travel team girl and found an under-resourced girls basketball environment in our new state and large metro city in the south. When we finally found the one semi-deep program, they wouldn’t put any new 10 yos on the A team or B team. Too much politics. Roster was full. 10 players max. Go on the new C team. Some girls grades only had 4-7 players even for gr 5. Athletic girls who wanted to play or played before, couldn’t find a good program or team so quit to do lax, v ball or even water polo. Meanwhile beginners churned in and out and either never got better or moved on. It’s been a shame. |
